LISBON (POR, Oct 14): Morocco’s Mustapha El Aziz won the Lisbon Half Marathon in a course record of 60:16 from Ethiopia’s Abdiwak Tura (60:41) and Amanuel Mesel (60:45). Kenya’s former New York Marathon winner Stanley Biwott was fifth in 61:47 while world record-holder Zersenay Tadese had to settle for 11th in 62:55 less than a month after running in the Berlin Marathon. Ethiopia’s Yebrgual Melese won the women’s race also in a course record of 67:18 from European 10,000m champion Lonah Chemtai Salpeter who improved her Israeli record to 67:55 (2nd best in European lists 2018). Kenyans Betty Lempus (69:48) and Paskalia Chepkorir (70:25) were third and fourth respectively with world marathon champion Rose Chelimo from Bahrain fifth in 70:37. Top Portuguese finishers were Andre Pereira in 14th in 66:18 while Ana Dulce Felix returned from maternity leave with eighth in 71:50. Six runners broke 2:08:30 in the full marathon led by Ethiopia’s Limenih Getachew (2:07:34) and Kenyans Samuel Ndungu (2:07:51), Justus Kipkosgei (2:07:58) and reigning champion Ishhimael Chemtan (2:08:18) who were all under the previous course record of 2:08:21. Ethiopia’s Kuftu Dadiso ran a big PB of 2:24:56 to win the women’s race from Kenya’s Monica Jepkoech in 2:27:35.
