Ten runners sub 28
NIJMEGEN (NED, Jun 15): Ten athletes ducked under the 28 minute-barrier for 10,000m at the Next Generation Athletics Meeting in Nijmegen. Tesfahun Akalnew and Haftu Teklu took an Ethiopian one-two in 27:30.24 and 27:30.88 with USA’s Kirubel Erassa (27:32.89) and Kenya’s Erick Kiptanui (27:33.42) third and fourth respectively. There was also a high quality 5000m with Ethiopia’s Tsehay Gemechu winning in 14:59.79 ahead of Ugandans Sarah Chelangat (15:00.61) and Stella Chesang (15:06.00). Elsewhere, Uganda’s Ronald Musagala won the 1500m in 3:35.81 ahead of Kenya’s former world U20 champion Kumari Taki (3:36.05), European indoor 400m bronze medallist Tony van Diepen stepped up in distance to win the 800m in 1:46.90 and Australia’s Carley Thomas won the women’s equivalent in 2:02.85.
