Some athletes are competitors, some are record busters. At this early time in his career, Asafa Powell leans toward the second. Running in the second heat at Rieti, Italy, with a legal wind of 1.78 ms, Asafa Powell ran 9.74 seconds, the fastest legal time ever in the world for 100 meters. In the final, Powell ran 9.78 seconds for 100 meters. This gives Asafa, less than two weeks after the 100 meter final of the World Champs, where he took to bronze, the world record all by himself……

Juan Carlos Higuero of Spain won the 1,500 meters in 3:34.78, with Jon Rankin of the U.S. taking fifth in 3:35.72, with Kevin Sullivan of Canada in seventh in 3:37.39, and Christopher Lukezic of the U.S. took eighth for 3:37.97. Thomas Longosiwa of Kenya took first 7:32.79, with Jon Riley in 7:57.09, Galen Rupp in tenth in 8:01.90. Reyes Estevez of Spain (who ran a 3:34.50 in 1,500 meters in Germany recently) dnfed as did Adam Goucher.
Irving Saldino of Panama won the long jump in 8.31m. Koji Murofushi of Japan won the hammer in 82.62m, defeating Osaka gold medalist Ivan Tsikhan of Belarus by a small margin in 82.61m.
Lauryn Williams ran 22.76 for 200 meters, taking the race, over Stephanie Durst in 22.87. Janeth Jepkosgei of Kenya does not seem to be able to do anything but win, running a fast 1:56.29, her third 1.56 in two weeks! In the 1,500 meters won by Olga Yegorova of Russia in 4:03.27, Lauren Fleshman too fifth in 4:05.62, with Treniere Clement in sixth in 4:05.68.
In the women’s 3,000 meters, Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya, the silver medalist at 5,000 m from Osaka took the 3k in 8>30.25. In third place was Kara Goucher, bronze medalist from the 10k, running a personal best of 8:34.99, with Jennifer Rhines in seventh in 9:02.08. In the 3k steeple, won by Yekaterina Volkova of Russia ran 9:26.80 with Lisa Galaviz of the U.S. in 9:39.03.
In the end, Rieti has been the home of many world records, dating back to one Sebastian Coe, who ran a world record at 1,500 meters in Rieti, Italy. Asafa Powell’s world record of 9.74 puts one person on top of the 100 meter men’s world record, and he is from Jamaica. Watch for a possible dual between Powell and Tyson Gay next
week in Brussells at the Ivo Van Damme Memorial.
