Weltklasse is the first meet after the World Championships. It is obvious that many athletes have already called their seasons or are still recovering. This is the kind of meet where athletes who did not have good World Champs start to shine, however, there were some breakers of that rule.

07/09/2007
Francis Obikwelu won the 100 meters here in a race devoid of any of the Osaka sprint medalists. Xavier Carter, recovered from the muscle spasms at the AT&T Outdoor championships and ran a very nice 19.92 to defeat Osaka silver medalist Usain Bolt. In a slowish 1,500 meters, featuring all Osaka finishers, but the medalists, Mehdi Baala of France won in 3:38.62, with Alan Webb in seventh.
Probably the best performance on the men’s side was Bernard Lagat, who won the 3,000 meters over a good field. Matt Tegankamp was eighth in 7:54.
On the women’s side, Christine Arron of France overcame a fast start by Torri Edwards to win in 11.17.
Sanya Richards ran 49.36, winning by over 1.5 seconds to take the 400 meters and join Yelena Isinbayeva in the hunt for $1 million in gold. Susana Kallur of Sweden dusted a great hudle field and Vlasic Blanka of Croatia continued her winning ways in the high jump.
Next meet on the circuiti is the Ivo Van Damme Meeting, where Kenenisa Bekele told me in an interview at Osaka he was going for the world 10k record and hoped to hit 5k in 13:05! Some running!
