Hot June Night in Oslo! Tirunesh Dibaba Breaks 5k World Record, 14:11.15! Wariner goes 43.98! by Larry Eder

Tirunesh Dibaba was always shown herself as a savvy, savvy racer. Today, in Oslo, she showed her stuff as a athlete of many faces. With the pacemakers down at 2,400 meters, then two laps of help from her sister, Ejegayu, and for the last mile, Tirunesh was on her own! Running the last three kilometers in 8:27, Tirunesh Dibaba ran 14:11.15, breaking the year old record of Meseret Defar by five seconds! Ironically, Defar will be attempting to break the 5k record on Sunday, June 8 in Eugene, Oregon!
Lucy Kabuu Wangui of Kenya was second in 14:33.49, Ejegayehu Dibaba was third in 14:36.78, Belaynesh Fikadu of Ethiopia was fourth in 14:52.39 and Jennifer Rhines of the US ran 14:54.29, a personal best for the 5,000 m, taking fifth place.

Jeremy Wariner came back from his loss last week with a fine 43.98 for 400 meters, to regain the event lead!
In the 800 meters, Abudaker Kaki Khamis of Sudan ran a world leading and scorching 1:42.69! This was a week after his 1,500 meter personal best. David Rhudisah ran 1:43.72, with Mbulaeni Mulaudzi of South Africa in 1:44.04!
Bershawn Jackson showed his stuff with a nice 48.15 to take the 400 m hurdles over Danny McFarlane, the grand old man of the 400 m hurdles, from Jamaica. James Carter was sixth in 50.15.
The one mile was won by Andrew Baddeley in 3:49.38 over Haron Keitany in 3:49.70 with Deresse Mekonnen, the Valencia indoor champ, third in close company in 3:49.72.
The Brits also won the men’s 1,500 meters with Thomas Lancashire, in 3:35.33.
And finally, I am going on the record on this one. Watch out for my man, Derrick Atkins, who won in Oslo in 9.98. This guy is tough, and he is a racer. I do not care if three guys run 9.71 or better this summer, Mr. Atkins and Mr. Gay will be two of the men I put my predictions on.
What a great meet! I texted the agent of Tirunesh Dibaba, asking about her race. One second later, this came back; ” Increadible, She ran 8:37 for the last 3k!”
Enough said.
Bianca Knight was second in the 100 meters, in 11.25 to Sherri-Ann Brooks of Jamaica in 11.24. Knight came back in the 200 to run 22.56 for the win over Russia’s Yulia Gushchina.
Pamela Jelimo is three for three with her 1:55.41 for the win here, by three seconds! Seven women under 1:59.77!
In the women’s steeplechase, Gulnara Samitova-Galkina ran 9:14.77, with Yekaterina Volkova in second in 9:18.24, Donna McFarlane of Australia in third in 9:18.35, and in fourth Ruth Nyangua in 9:18.43!
Josephine Onyia of Spain won the 100 m hurdles over Lo Lo Jones, who ran 12.66 for second and Susana Kallur in third in 12.71. This is the third time in two weeks these three queens of the hurdles have met!
In the end it was the night of the 5,000 meters. Oslo, where the gods of distance running have blessed a stadium like few others, saw Tirunesh Dibaba unleash all of her many gifts to break her teammates world record, running an astonishing 14:11.15.
In closing, consider the few words of Mark Wetmore of Global Athletics, and he agent of both Tirunesh and Meseret, who texted the following in response to my queries on the race:
“Incredible. She ran 8.27 for the last 3k! ”
Enough Said.
