Well,Monday, Day 3, was another tremendous evening. Here were my highlights:

Day 3 Photo of the Day: Yelena Isinbayeva no heights! photo by PhotoRun.net.

1. Primoz Kozmus of Slovenia is a consumate competitor. Syzmon Zlolkowski of Poland took the lead in round 1 with 77.44m, Kozmus threw 79.74m in round two, and just kept throwing, in round five, he hit 80.15m, and, just to show who is boss, Primoz Kozmus of Slovenia threw 80.84m, to entertain the crowd and cement the gold medal. Kristian Pars of Hungary kept 30 million Hungarian hammer fans happy with his 78.09m in round five, giving him the bronze.

2. In the 400 meter hurdle rounds, Melanie Walker of Jamaica ran 55.12. All three Americans, Sheena Tosta, Tiffany Williams and Lashinda Demus cranked a 54.66 to show whose the boss!
3. Yelena Isinbayeva, the two time World Champ, and the two time Olympic champ, finally had a bad night. Missing at 4.75m, then missing twice at 4.80m, she no heighted and was stunned herself almost more than the crowd. Anna Rogowsa of Poland was the only vaulter who cleared 4.75m and Monica Pyrek of Poland and Chelsea Johnson of the US tied for the silver at 4.65m. ( We did a story on the event).

4. In women’s 800 meter rounds, Hazel Clark of US only US runner who moved on. Making a tactical error, Maggie Vessey, in the race at the 400 meters, seemed to be
following Pamela Jelimo of Kenya, who dropped out at 600 meters. By then, Vessey tried, but could not muster enough gas to move on. Vessey is quite talented, but she needs to run the rounds, and stay closer to the fields.
5. In the women’s triple jump, Yargeris Savigne of Cuba showed her stuff and took the gold in 14.95m, with Mabel Gay of Cuba in silver with 14.61m, her seasonal best. Annay Pyatykh of Russia was third in 14.58, for the bronze. My jump goddess, Tatyana Lebedeva of Russia, was sixth in 14.37. Lebedeva has had back problems and did not decide to compete until Saturday, August 15, 2009.
6. Nice to see three Americans, Lopez Lomong, Bernard Lagat and Leonel Manzano move on to the 1,500 m final. GBR’s James Brewer missed by.20 as did Portugal’s Rui Silva, Andrew Baddeley of GBR and Reyes Estevez of Spain. Dorian Ulrey of the US was twelfth in his heat, and did not advance.
7. Marta Dominguez of Spain ran the perfect race, taking the lead over the last barrier to win in 9:07.32, the world leader in the steeplechase, for the gold. Yuliya Zarudneva of Russia ran her personal best for the silver, in 9:08.39, and Milcah Chemos Cheywa of Kenya was the bronze medalist in 9:08.57. Gulnara Gulkina of Russia, the favorite, was fourth in 9:11.09, and Jennifer Barringer, the US finalist, dropped ten seconds off her own AR with her come from behind, last three laps rush to an AR in 9:12.50. (We did a feature on this).

8. Running the first half in 13:40 and the last half in 13:06, Zersenay Tadesse tried gamely to break Kenenisa Bekele, but the winner of each WC since 2003, and two time Olympic champion used a fast last 300 meters to put four seconds on Tadesse. Bekele won in 26:46.31, Tadesse in 26:50.12 and Moses Masai in 26:57.39. Remarkably, Dathan Ritzenhein shot through the crowd, moving to 27:22.28, his personal best, for sixth. Galen Rupp was eighth in 27:37.99 and Tim Nelson was 17th in 28:18.04. ( see feature).

9. Shelly-Ann Fraser of Jamaica dusted the field with her 10.73 world leader in the 100 meter final. Kerron Stewart ran 10.75 for her personal best in the silver. Carmeliat Jeter ran 10.90 in third and Veronica Campbell-Brown, the defending champion, ran 10.95, her seasonal best. Lauryn Williams was fifth in 11.01, her seasonal best.
