SCOTT NAMED TO HEAD ING MIAMI MARATHON®
David Scott , who worked in the University of Miami athletic department for 28 years, has been named General Manager and Race Director for US Road Sports & Entertainment of Florida , the organizing body of the ING Miami Marathon ® and a series of other endurance races in South Florida .
Scott replaces Ted Metellus, who was Race Director for the 2009 event.
Scott will head up the US Road Sports Florida region and the production and race event management for several other races in addition to the ING Miami Marathon ® — the Publix Escape to Miami Triathlon, the 13.1 Marathon Miami Beachâ„¢, 13.1 Marathon Ft. Lauderdaleâ„¢, and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida Running Series that includes the annual Turkey Trot at Tropical Park.
“I am excited about joining US Road Sports and the ING Miami Marathon® and being a part of the health and fitness industry,” Scott said. “I look forward to continuing to produce a world class event in South Florida utilizing the resources of our great community. I have enjoyed the success of team-oriented national championships and will try to capture that same atmosphere for all individual participants of our events.”
Scott’s career at the University of Miami began as Assistant Baseball Coach under the legendary Ron Fraser from 1976-77 and 1981-87, sharing in the experience of national championships in 1982 and 1985. In between Miami baseball stints, Scott was head coach at Florida College in Tampa , also serving as athletic director from 1979-81.
In the fall of 1987, Scott succeeded Butch Davis as the Recruiting Coordinator for Football and assisted Coach Jimmy Johnson in recruiting some of the nation’s finest student-athletes the next two years. In 1989, he was appointed Assistant Athletic Director for Football and also continued as Recruiting Coordinator for Coach Dennis Erickson. The Hurricanes were crowned National Champions in 1987, 1989 and 1991 while enjoying one of the greatest stretches of college football dominance.
In 1992, Scott accepted more administrative responsibilities and was appointed as Assistant Athletic Director for Operations. Scott oversaw game day operations at the Orange Bowl and Dolphin Stadium, football team travel and served as the department’s bowl travel coordinator while taking the Hurricanes to 17 bowl games. He also supervised athletic facilities for the athletic department during many years and served as the Travel Coordinator for all teams from 1998-2005.
“The US Road Sports national platform combined with the outstanding local efforts of the world-class team in Miami bodes well for the continued success and growth of the Miami series of races,” said Greg Laird , president, US Road Sports & Entertainment Group. “Race operations and event management is an essential element of creating an exceptional racer experience and David brings a wealth of experience with him into this position. While managing our operations in Florida and serving as the Race Director for the ING Miami Marathon and our other signature events, we will also rely on his national experience as he assists US Road Sports with its growth in the racing industry.”
“Over the years, we have made additions to our family to help us grow and become a stronger and community-focused company,” co-founder Frankie Ruiz said. “ING joined our family and brought the marathon to new heights while Blue Cross and Blue Shield helped us create a full running season. We are proud to bring in a new leader in David Scott to usher in a healthy future for our company and the community. We are now reemphasizing our goals and commitments by bringing in a fresh face with great experience and potential, someone who will help us make Miami the top running destination in the world.”
The ING Miami Marathon ®, South Florida’s premier running event, will be held January 31, 2010 through the streets of downtown Miami , Miami Beach and Coconut Grove.
