SPIKES Magazine wins Two Awards!, from spikesmag.com, Note by Larry Eder

SPIKES Magazine (www.spikesmag.com) is an innovative publication, developed in the UK by Haymarket Publications for the IAAF and UK Athletics, to add some excitement to the sport of athletics. After some very positive discussions, SPIKES is testing the interest in the US this fall and early winter with a distribution of 15,000 issues of SPIKES autumn 2009 across the country. Subscribers of Coaching Athletes received copies of SPIKES with the fall issue in October 2009. In December, the attendees of the USATF convention will receive sample issues, as well as the coaches who receive the Winter issues of Athletes Only.
Plans with Haymarket Publications is to have SPIKES in North America distributed to the readers of American Track & field, Athletes Only and Coaching Athletics, approximately 150,000 circulation. American Track & Field, Athletes Only and Coaching Athletics Quarterly are published by Shooting Star Media, Inc.
SPIKES intention is to publish two to four times in 2010, for the North American audience. ” SPIKES magazine is a tremendous shot in the arm to today’s athletics media, and we see it as a perfect complement to our athletics coaching and participant titles, ” noted Group Publisher for Shooting Star Media, Inc., Larry Eder. Eder also noted, ” SPIKES is well-written, topical and exciting, as as if proper coverage was given to the sport of athletics, SPIKES magazine should be in every track fans home!”

SPIKES wins two International Customer Publishing Awards

Without wishing to blow our own trumpet, SPIKES and spikesmag.com scooped a couple of awards at the annual International Customer Publishing Awards in London this week.
The first gong was for Best Consumer Publication (non-retail) and the second was for Editor of the Year.
SPIKES and spikesmag.com also earned a highly commended â€“ or, in our language, a silver medal â€“ for the prestigious Grand Prix award. Not bad going considering more than 420 magazines entered.
The judges at the awards ceremony said: â€œsmart, edgy and controversial, SPIKES is a bold statement on the way athletics is and the way it should be, with interviews with top athletes and fiercely contested debates contributing to the stylish mix.â€
Anyway, enough boasting for one morning â€“ we should get back to work and bring you more from our wonderful world of athletics at SPIKES and spikesmag.com.

Larry Eder has had a 52-year involvement in the sport of athletics. Larry has experienced the sport as an athlete, coach, magazine publisher, and now, journalist and blogger. His first article, on Don Bowden, America's first sub-4 minute miler, was published in RW in 1983. Larry has published several magazines on athletics, from American Athletics to the U.S. version of Spikes magazine. He currently manages the content and marketing development of the RunningNetwork, The Shoe Addicts, and RunBlogRun.
