Tremendous second day of European Champs. Christophe Lemaitre took the 100 meters, and hundreths of seconds separated second through fifth! More to come!

QUOTE OF THE SESSION

“I got to the final on
a lucky star and I got to these championships on a lucky star.
2010 is my year I am the happiest man in the world I cannot complain
– I said I’d take fourth place before the final and I ended up with
second,” Mark Lewis-Francis after being second in the 100 m.

 

RESULT OF THE SESSION

From statistical point of view
the 0.006 difference between 2nd and 5th in the 100 m: 10.172 Lewis-Francis,
10.173 Mbandjock, 10.174 Obikwelu, 10.178 Chambers. Also to note two European
leads (Abeylegesse and Borlee). European U23 record in women 10 000 m by Turkish Meryem
Erdogan 31:44.86 as 5th.

 

SURPRISE OF THE SESSION

Inna Radevica, the long jump
European Champion.

 

FAVORITES FALLS

World leader Nadine Muller only
8th in discus, long jump title defender Lyudmila Kolchanova fifth in long jump,
world indoor champion Dwain Chambers fifth in the 100 m..

First ever medal for Slovak
Republic since independence in 1993. Before in the former Czecho-Slovakia five
golds by Slovaks (Chmelkova 1966, 400
m, Demec, 1971, 4×100 m, Bugar, 1982, discus,
Pribilinec, 1986, 20 km
w, Blazek 1990, 20 km
w).

Men’s 400m: Jonathan Borlee’s
44.71 is the fastest semi-final time ever in th European Championships.
(previous record was 44.82 by I Thomas in 1998) Marco Vistalli ran 45.38 in the semi but
failed to qualify for the final. It was the fastest ever non-qualifying (for
the final) time at the Euro Champ.

Women Discus: By winning
a silver medal, Nicoleta Grasu became the first ever three time medal
winner in the WDT at the European Championships Sandra Perkovic of CRO is the
first ever medal winner for CRO in WDT at the European Championships.

Men’s 100m: Christopher
Lemaitre’s 10.06 in
the semi is the fastest ever semi at the 100m in the Euro Champ (previous
record was 10.09 by Christie in 1990) 10.27 by Ryan Mosely tied the fastest
ever non-qualifier (for the final) at 100m in the Euro Champ. 10.11 is the
slowest winning time since 1994, when the race was also marred with the
headwind (-0.5m/s in 1994).

W400m hurdles: 55.49 by
Fabienne Kohlmann is the fastest non-qualifier for the final at W400mH in the
Euro Champ.

WLJ:  The gold medal was decided by the countback
(2nd best jump decided the gold medal because the best jump were the same) for
the first time in

WLJ at Euro Champ. It was also the first
medal for Latvia in this event at Euro Champ.

W10000m: It was the first medal
for TUR at W10000m in Euro Champ The winning time of 31:10.23 is the fastest
time in Barcelona by European (Previous record 31:26.11 by McColgan in 1992
OG).

 

SPECTATORS

Official 28 232.

 

OTHERS

ITALY: Simone Collio did not
run the 100 m
final totally healthy. He finished so late that the recording already stopped.
No time and  result.

DECATHLON: Both initially
disqualified athletes in the 400
m (lane) Eelco Sintnicolaas and Marcin Drozdz were later
reinstated.

HUNGARY: Hungary protested
against the winning throw of Libor Charfreitag claiming it was a foul. But
the protest was rejected.
