EME NEWS (JUL 29, 2010) MORNING SESSION

QUOTE OF THE SESSION

“I was a little fearful
when I saw that little red thing next to my name on the board. I’d reacted
off Olijar, he’d false started and then I went, but it’s been known to
disqualify two people. I had to maintain my composure and just do what
I had to do,” Andy Turner after 110 m hurdles heat.

RESULT OF THE SESSION

52.06 by Mikko Halvari is the
longest discus during decathon at the European Championships. His PB from early
July is 52.84.

SURPRISE OF THE SESSION

Pole vaulter Malte Mohr winner
of DL in Shanghai, second in Oslo, third in Lausanne and German champion did
not qualify in pole vault after missing three times 565.

FAVORITES FALLS

Oleksiy Kasyanov of Ukraine who
was overnight decathlon leader did not compete in the 110 m hurdles because of an
knee tendon. Bulgarian Dacheva and Russian Katyukova out in triple
qualification, both jumping well over the standard in the season.

STATS (by Ken Nakamura)

PV: 565 required for automatic
qualifying for the men’s PV is the highest ever for auto-qualifying. As
a consequence, two vaulters – Michal Balner of CZE and Eemeli Salomaki of
Finland – failed to qualify for the final of Men’s PV despite clearing 5.60m,
the highest non-qualifying (for the final) height in the European
Championships.

Women’s TJ: 14.93 (+3.7) triple
jump by Nadezhda Alekhina is the longest TJ in any circumstances in the
qualifying round at the European Championships.

SPECTATORS

Estimated at 5000.

OTHERS

GREAT BRITAIN: Hurdler Andy
Turner had a scary moment at the beginning of his race when thinking he
might have been disqualified for a false start but Stanislav Olijar of
Latvia was revealed  as the perpetrator.
The reaction time of Turner was also below 0.100 but he was not disqualified.

PORTUGAL: As expected title
defender Francis Obikwelu was not running the 200 m heats, this season he
contested before only one 200
m race (21.00).

LATVIA: Title defender
Stanislav Olijars was disqualified after false start in the 110 m hurdles heats.

AGENTS RANKING

Aleksandr Porkhomovskiy 2,
Pavel Voronkov 2, Ricky Simms, Daniel Wessfeldt, Rene Auguin, Munir Yaras,
Alfons Juck 1 gold medal.
