Mikhnevich 22.10
MINSK (BLR, Aug 11): European shot put champion Andrey Mikhnevich showed
impressive shape just before World Championships. At national meet in
Minsk he improved the national record by 1 cm to 22.10 m (Sergey
Kasnauskas 22.09 in 1984). That is second best mark in the world this
year and European leader 2011. In men´s hammer Pavel Krivitskiy got
80.67 m, also second best in the world this year. Elena Matoshko was the
best in women hammer with 72.86 m. Solid hopes for the women 4×400 m
team as Anna Tashpulatova achieved 51.83 ahead of junior Yuliana
Yushchenko 52.19 and Ilona Usovich 52.67. Latvian guest Aiga Grabuste
leaped to 640 in the long jump.
Wlodarczyk 73.05, Malachowski beaten
BYDGOSZCZ (POL, Aug 11): Polish national championships started in cold
and rainy weather. Olympic winner Tomasz Majewski won the shot put with
20.94 but European discus winner Piotr Malachowski was only second with
63.21. The title went to Przemyslaw Czajkowski who registered 63.81.
Hammer world champion Anita Wlodarczyk achieved high quality 73.05 to
get the title. Pawel Stempel was the 100 m winner in 10.48 (-0.2) and
Marika Popowicz in women category 11.55 (-0.3). Former European indoor
champion Lidia Chojecka won the 5000 m in 15:46.88. In tactical men´s
steeple the title for Lukasz Kujawski 8:40.22 ahead of Krystian Zalewski
8:40.75 and the fastest this year Lukasz Parszczynski 8:41.48. Michal
Rosiak won the long jump (768) and 800 m European U23 Champion Adam
Kszczot clocked personal best in the 400 m heat with 46.51 (the fastest
time 46.16 by Marcin Marciniszyn).

LOUGHBOROUGH (GBR, Aug 11): Personal best at 100 m hurdles for
heptathlon world champion Jessica Ennis in her last competition before
travelling off to Korea as she clocked at EAP meet here 12.79 (+1.5) to beat former world
indoor champion Derval O’Rourke of Ireland (12.87). In men´s event good
time for William Sharman (13.47, +1.5) ahead of Damien Broothaerts of
Belgium 13.67 and European junior silver winner Andrew Pozzi who
improved his personal best to 13.73. Men´s 400 m hurdles was won in
49.79 by Rhys Williams from French Adrien Clemenceau 50.12.. Womens race
to French champ Phara Anacharsis in 57.61 ahead of Caryl Granville
58.28 and Nusrat Ceesay frorm Gambia 58.46 (NR).
Fortes 20.89 in shot put is new NR
COPENHAGEN (DEN, Aug 11): New national record for Portugal in shot put
at Copenhagen Athletics Games as Marco Fortes achieved 20.89 m. His
former mark was 20.69 from June last year. Second home Kim Christensen
improved to 20.06 m outdoor PB. Morten Jensen leaped to 797 long jump win and Sara
Petersen won the 400 m hurdles in 57.94. Andreas Bube also confirmed
decent shape with 1:47.56 800 m win. Bahamian quarter-miler Michael
Mathieu clocked in rain good double 10.69 (-0.2) at 100 m and 46.72 in
the 400 m. US Jamie Nieto beat with 219 Briton Samson Oni (216).

KINGSTON (JAM): The Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) confirmed
Trackalerts.com breaking story on Wednesday that a Jamaican athlete
returned Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) or positive test at June’s
National trials. However, just like Trackalerts.com, which has not
release the name of the athlete, JADCO did the same when the issued a
press release on Thursday afternoon. The release read: “The Jamaica
Anti-Doping Commission has received an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF)
from a sample collected at the Jamaica National Trials on June 24, 2011.
JOHANNESBURG (RSA): Defending women’s 800m world champion Caster Semenya
withdrew from the World Student Games held in Shenzhen due to a
niggling back injury. Her withdrawal from the student games was
confirmed by University Sport South Africa’s (USSA) athletics chairman
Glen Bentley on Thursday. Semenya still plans for world title defence in
Daegu.
DAEGU (KOR): The organisers of the upcoming world athletics
championships tried to limit competitors’ access to religious services
in the village where they will be staying, Church officials claimed
yesterday. In the apartment buildings set aside for competitors’ use
during the IAAF World Championships, which run from August 27 to
September 4 in Daegu, there will be a religious service center with four
“prayer rooms” – one each for Buddhists, Catholics, Muslims and
Protestants. But Father Alfonsus Kim Young-ho, pastoral director of
Daegu archdiocese, said that “at first the organisers suggested all four
religions could use one room and stressed there should not be any
religious litugy there.” He added: “They even asked us not to install
any religious symbols in the room.” As a result, Father Kim said, “the
archdiocese has decided not to join in running the religious service
center.” But Kim Young-soo, manager of the athletes’ village, explained
that the IAAF had asked them “not to disturb the athletes to ensure they
get sufficient rest.” Korean media are informing.
DAEGU (KOR): Koreatimes informs that China´s mega star hurdler Liu Xiang
is hoping to show his best at the World Athletics Championships in
Daegu, as the former 110-meter hurdles world record holder seems to have
fully recovered from injury.
OTTAWA (CAN): Athletics Canada named a contingent of 32 athletes who
will travel to Daegu. “Korea is our dress rehearsal for London and we
are preparing athletes to have their best performances of the year in
Daegu. Our veterans are ready; Armstrong, Felicien, Zelinka and the
men’s 4x100m team are tracking for top finishes. The return from injury
of Scott Russell in the javelin and Jim Steacy in the hammer, both
Olympic finalists in Beijing, adds further depth to the Team,” said Alex
Gardiner, World Championship team Head Coach. He adds, “In September
we will analyze the results, define the gaps and set our final plan for

MUNSTER (GER): The German long jump talent Lena Malkus ended her season
and is not aiming at Daegu participation. The European junior champion
achieved twice this year the B-standard for Daegu and had good chances
to be selected.
LAUSANNE (SUI): European Athletics has launched the European
Athletics Coaching Awards to celebrate the important contributions
made by coaches to the sport of athletics. All 50 European Athletics
Member Federations have been asked to select one male and one female
winner for 2011 based on the criteria ‘excellence in coaching’. The
awards will be confirmed by a European Athletics appointed jury,
which will include a representative of the European Athletics
Coaches Association. In addition, coaches whose athletes have won a
senior European Athletics Championship will automatically receive
the award reports European Athletics.
NEW YORK (USA): Race Results Weekly informs that former New York Times
sportswriter Frank Litsky celebrated his 85th birthday last weekend.
Among those celebrating with her was his former Times editor Neil Amdur,
Bob Hersh UAAF Vice-President, Mary Wittenberg of New York Road
Runners, Walt Murphy, Elliott Denman, and Kathrine Switzer and her
husband Roger Robinson. Beginning his coverage of track and field in
1964, Litsky penned stories from more than 15 countries and covered
numerous Olympics and other major track and field events through his
long tenure at the Times before his retirement several years ago. He was
also the long-time President of the New York Track Writers Association.
