Big Sur Marathon Adds Delicious Sponsors to its Lineup

Ghirardelli, Starbucks and Ventana Wine all a part of 2012 race event

The Big Sur International Marathon has great taste in sponsors.
Chocolate, coffee and wine – delicious offerings with qualities
beneficial to runners’ performance as well as their palates – are among
three new supplier sponsors for the 2012 event.  Big Sur has partnered
with Ghirardelli Chocolate Company, Starbucks Coffee and Ventana Wine to
benefit its runners, VIPs and race volunteers.

Ghirardelli, a famous name in premium
chocolate products is the newest to partner with the premium marathon
on the California Coast.  Runners will receive free samples at the
Health & Fitness Expo, April 27 & 28, and can visit
The Ghirardelli® Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop in Monterey for their world famous hot fudge sundaes topped with freshly homemade hot fudge.

               Starbucks Coffee Company
will provide 100 gallons of coffee to fuel both runners and volunteers
on race morning.  Eleven local stores are working together to support
the non-profit race as part of its mission to be good neighbors and
serve the community.

Estate Grown and bottled, Ventana Vineyard
spans 400 acres in the Arroyo Seco AVA of Monterey County.  Ventana has
partnered with Big Sur Marathon to provide a special souvenir Big Sur
Marathon Chardonnay as well as wine for VIP events.  Ventana is one of
Monterey County’s premier vineyards, established in 1974.

Recent studies indicate that dark chocolate can help lower blood
pressure and cholesterol, and both chocolate and wine offer significant
antioxidant protection.  Numerous studies have also been made on the
positive effects of caffeine on athletic performance, making it
one of the few performance enhancers that is not banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

“We’re excited to bring on these partners whose products will help
enhance the runners’ experience and enjoyment,” said Julie Armstrong,
Marketing Communications Director of the Big Sur International
Marathon.  “Our volunteers, too, will be able to enjoy and chocolate and
coffee donated by these formidable brands.  And, we’re looking forward
to having Ventana sell our souvenir wine along with a selection of their
own great varietals.”

Ghirardelli, Starbucks and Ventana join the ranks of other key Big Sur
sponsors including Asics, Runner’s World, Dole, Granite Construction,
Gatorade, GU and others.  The 2012 Big Sur International Marathon takes
place Sunday, April 29.
