How does one describe the Usain Bolt phenomenon? Well, if one is on any of the Samsung meetings that Usain supports, or Ostrava, one of the IAAF Challenge meets he runs, you would see the promise with the sport of track and field globally and the opportunities in US with someone who had Bolt’s charisma. Last time it happened in US was when Bill Rodgers was best road racer in world, in 78-79. Rodger’s charm and just regular guyness built on Frank Shorter’s Olympic greatness: Shorter opened runners eyes, Rodgers kept them dreaming. Salazar just blew the media away: he had the ability to predict when he ran fast.
I really think Jochen Zeitz, PUMA CEO, gets it. With Bolt, he has someone who makes running fun, and his personality and joie de vivre keep the media entranced. Usain Bolt will command the Eternal City for the next week.

Bruciando tutti, ed in netto anticipo rispetto alle previsioni, Usain Bolt
è arrivato a Roma nel primo pomeriggio di oggi. Il numero uno
dell’atletica mondiale ha lasciato Ostrava in tarda mattinata,
all’indomani del suo esordio sul suolo europeo, scegliendo di trasferirsi
nella capitale per preparare al meglio l’appuntamento con il Compeed
Golden Gala di giovedì sera allo Stadio Olimpico, dove troverà ad
attenderlo, tra gli altri, il connazionale Asafa Powell, il francese
Christophe Lemaitre, e Kim Collins (St Kitts & Nevis). Sorridente come
sempre, accompagnato dal suo fisioterapista, Bolt ha raggiunto, primo tra
gli atleti, il quartier generale del meeting, l’ATA Hotel Villa Pamphili,
dove alloggerà e dove, martedì mattina (ore 12) incontrerà la stampa
internazionale prima del meeting. “Sto bene – ha detto il giamaicano
all’arrivo – e spero di riuscire ad esprimermi al meglio sulla pista
dell’Olimpico. A Roma ho vissuto una bella esperienza lo scorso anno, ed è
per questo che sono tornato. Ostrava? Mah, non so dire cosa sia successo
(riferimento al 10.04 con cui ha vinto la gara, tempo che non lo ha
soddisfatto, ndr), in realtà non è andata poi così male; probabilmente ha
pesato anche il fatto di non aver riposato al meglio dopo il mio arrivo in
Europa”.

USAIN BOLT IS IN ROME: I’M OK, AND HOPE TO RUN FAST HERE
Usain Bolt is in Rome. The World athletics’ number one landed at the
airport of Roma Fiumicino in the early afternoon of today, Saturday 26
May, in order to get ready for his race at the Compeed Golden Gala of
Thursday evening. On that occasion, he will face three of the best
competitors on the World sprint scenario: compatriot Asafa Powell,
France’s Christophe Lemaitre, and Kim Collins of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Nice and smiling as usual, Bolt reached the ATA Hotel Villa Pamphili,
where he will be accommodated and where he will meet the international
Media on Tuesday, 29 May (start time: 12:00). “I’m OK – said Usain Bolt
upon his arrival – and I hope to run fast on the track of the Olympic
Stadium. I loved the crowd here last year, so I decided to be back.
Ostrava? Well I don’t know what exactly happened there, but I think my
time was not that bad at the end. Maybe the long travel, and the fact I
didn’t sleep a lot since my arrival in Europe played a role”.
