Haile Gebreselassie with Jos Hermans, From 2012 Tokyo, by PhotoRun.net
In a meeting that will most likely be known as the end of an era, the performances were tremendous.  Ten men under 3:35.5, the Olympic A standard, for 1,500m, six women under the 1,500m A, and nine men under 27:45, the Olympic A for the men’s 10,000m.
In the women’s discus, Zaneta Glanc won the event with a third round throw  of 64.71m. After the Pole, Sendruite Zinaida, LTU, took second on her second round throw of 62.74m. Joanna Wisnieska, also of Poland, took third with a throw of 59.50m.
Ronnie Ash powered over the 110m hurdles, sprinting to a win in 13.31. Andrew Pozzi, Gbr, ran 13.39, taking second. Arthur Noga, POL, took third in 13.45. The race was into a headwind.
The women’s 1,500m was one of the most exciting races of the night. Danuta Urbanik, POL, lead the 400m in 64.25, and at 800m in 2:12.18. Corrina Harrer took over the pacing chores and charged through the next lap, hitting  the bell in 3:04.25, and the 1.200m in 3:18.30. The pack was tight.
Hannah England, the 2011 WC silver medalist at 1,500m, used a 59.9 last lap to take the race in 4:04.05. Corrina Harrer, also of Great Britian, ran her pb in 4:04.81, taking second. Laura Weightmann ran a pb of 4:04.88, as the three Brits swept the top three.
In the men’s pole vault, Cyriel Verberne, NED, won the pole vault with a jump of 5.48m, a personal best. Baptiste Boirie, FRA, took second with his clearance of 5.42m. John Bakker took third with his clearance of 5.15m.
The men’s 800 meters was a classic lesson in pacing. Matthew Scherer, the pacemaker, took the field through the 400m in 50.5, and lead for another one hundred meters.
Adam Kszczot of Poland, took over from there and held on, running strongly over the last 300 meters, and holding off Timothy Kitum, KEN, 1:44.00, and Job Kinyor, also of Kenya, who ran 1:44.17, with Kszczot’s 1:43.83, a seasonal best.
The women’s 100m hurdles was also a revelation.Kellie Wells won with a time of 12.81. LoLo Jones finished second in 12.90, but it was such a competitive performance over Ostrava. Queen Harrison, finished third in 12.98, with Danielle Carruthers taking fourth in 13.04.
The men’s 1,500m was fast enough that ten runners were under 3:35.5, the Olympic A standard. Pacemakers Geoffrey Rono hit the 400m in 53.53, and Vickson Polonet hit the 800m in 1:50.50. Nixon Chepseba moved up front and hit the bell in 2:34, and the 1,200 in 2:48.16.
Nixon did not give up, he charged to the finish, running a fine 3:29.90, his personal best. Ayanleh Soulemin, of Djibouti, set a national record, finishing second, with his 3:30.31. Mekonnen Gebremedhin, ETH, finished third in 3:31.45, his personal best. In fact, eight of the first ten set . Nathan Brannen, of Canada, set his pb and made the A Olympic standard, and set a personal best, with his seventh place of 3:34.22.
Robert Harting had surgery last winter, but no one would know it. Harting threw 65.94m, 67.34m, fouled, then 68.13m, 66.98, and a final foul. Hartings fourth round 68.13m showed his margin of supremacy tonight. Virgilijius Alekna, Lithuania, finished second with a throw of 65.62m. Erik Cadee, NED, was third with a throw of 65.49m.
2011 World Champ, Phillips Idowu shows that he is on form. Less than two weeks after his victory, in Shanghai, over Will Claye and Christian Taylor. Idowu hit 16.79m, 17.12m, and finally, in the third round, 17.31m. that was enough to win. Fabrizio Schmembri of Italy jumped 16.74m, on his second attempt, and that held up for second. Issam Nima of Algeria finished third with a jump of  16.62m.
Lugelin Santos, of the Dominican Republic, is nineteen. Santos ran the 400 meters in 44.45, not only his personal, best, but his national record! Martyn Rooney, GBR, took second in 44.97 . Nery Brenes, Costa Rica, took third in 45.20.
Santos is one to watch.
The men’s 10,000 meters at the Fbk this year was one of the Ethiopian 10,000m Trials. In humid and hot conditions, some of the top Ethiopian runners battled their Olympic futures.
In the race was Haile Gebreselassie, who is called the Mayor of Hengelo. Gebreselassie set his first world record in Hengelo. He wanted his last track race to be in Hengelo. For all appearances, this race was Hailes last track race.
Frank Bollen of Belgium lead 1,000m in 2:41.79, 2,000m in 5:23.03. Vincent Rono lead thru 3,000m in 8:04.84. John Kipkoech lead at 4,000m in 10:46.63, and through the 5,000m in 13:29.55.
The players were Gebre Gegremariam, Tariku Bekele, Sileshi Sihane, Leliesa Desisa Benti, Abera Kuma and Haile Gebreselassie, in a group of ten.
Gebre Gebremariam, the 2010 ING NYCM champion lead through the 6,000m mark in 16:16.68, and 7,000m in 19:04.56. Gebremariam was annoyed, as no one would share the pacing chores.
Haile and Tariku were both upfront as the pack dropped to eight. Tiahun Regassa lead through 8,000m in 21:52.20, and 9,000m in 24:39.80.
Afterwards, Haile told the media, ” I started having trouble keeping pace at 8 laps to go. After that, I was done.”
Haile was there when the pack of 8 hit the bell lap in 26:16. Using a 55 second last lap, accelerating over the last 300 meters, and rushing the last 200m, Tariku Bekele won in 27:11.70. Leleisa Desisa Benti took second in 27:11.98. Sileshi Sihane took third in 27:12.60. Gebre Gebremariam took fourth in 27:13.66, Teklemariam Medhin,  Eritria, was fifth in 27:16.59. Tilahun Regassa, who had lead two kilometers late in the race, took sixth in 27:18.90.
In seventh place, Haile Gebreselassie ran 27:20.69, running his last lap in 64 .4. ” I no longer have a kick. I am changing my track suit for a real suit. Even if I had been named to the team, Why would I go to place seventh or tenth? This is it. It is over.”
Tariku Bekele noted, ” Two years ago, I was not a good runner. Training with my brother has been good. “
Dathan Ritzenhein started in the back with Simon Bairu, both chasing the A standards. Dathan had hit the 5,000m standard last weekend. Dathan chased the time of 27:45 by himself, passing people in the heat and humidity, with an estimated air temp of 76 degrees F. Dathan ran 27:50.82, and Simon Bairu running 28:46.82.
When Janeth Jepkosgei hit the
400m in 57.03, she was gone, running a fine 1:57.79, her seasonal best. Yuneysi Santiusti of Cuba took second in 1:58.53, her personal best. Annet Negessa of Uganda ran a NR of 1:59.08.
Charonda Williams of the US flew off the turn, grabbing in the air at the finish line, as she ran a winning 22.73. Jamile Samuel of the Netherlands, ran 22.93 for second. Tiffany Townsend ran 23.04 for third.
In the final event, the Netherlands Martina Churandy won the 100 meters in 10.18. Mario Forsythe of Jamaica ran 10.25 for second. Ansley Waugh of Jamaica ran 10.31 for third.
The Fbk Games overcame some economic hurdles to put on this meet. The event hospitality, the event itself, and the stadium are all first class. A sponsor looking for a global sporting event with a healthy atmosphere would be smart to look the FBK Games Hengelo.
