Mariya Savinova won the 800 meters with style and ease. She was not truly
challenged in the final. Savinova took the lead when needed, and took the lead with the precision of a surgeon. Savinova followed the swift pace and made her move when she chose.

As is her want, Alysia Montano took off from the start, hitting the 400 meter mark
in 56.24. Montano would fight, ending in fifth. She ran well and will end up breaking
American record.
Caster Semenya, the 2009 World champ, 2011 silver champ, ran a cautious race, only moving
into second over the last straightaway, taking the silver. Mariya Savinova asked Semenya
if she was feeling okay as Savinova believed that ONLY the South African could give her
some competition.

The battle for third was not over until the last steps as Pamela Jelimo lost her medal
chances when Ekaterina Poistogova of Russia caught Jelimo at the line.
