Usain Bolt, while short of the fitness that he may want at this time, woke a few people up with his WL furlong in 19.79. The scary thing is that Usain Bolt is probably two, perhaps three weeks away from being very fit, and he runs the 200 meters like he was made for it-and he was!

Speaking of being made for a distance, Meseret Defar ran 14:26.90 in Rome, winning by seven plus seconds. Defar is the queen of the 5,000 meters, and while, of course, she will have formidable competition in Moscow, Meseret Defar is as close to a sure thing at 12 and one half laps as there can be. (Just don’t tell Tirunesh Dibaba, who seems to be rounding into shape as well, from her race at Prefontaine. )

TOP MARKS: BOLT AND DEFAR

OSLO (NOR, Jun 13): Despite the chilly weather and swirling winds, the ExxonMobil Bislett Games lived to the expectations. Meseret Defar offered first highlight in the 5000 m and Usain Bolt closed the event with new meet record and world lead in the 200 m. Kipruto, Schwanitz, Hejnova, Ibarguen remained unbeaten this season.

Event by event review

100mH: Top four under 13 seconds in this European affair, Tiffany Porter got it in 12.76 (+1.4).

400mH: Hejnova again improved to 53.60 her season best and this time needed to fight from behind but succesfully made it. PSD in lane 2 showed her abilities 54.03 as second.

HJ: Shkolina started as only one as high as 190 and confirmed she is in great competition shape as only one cleared 197 and did two attempts at 201. Behind her rest of this great field suffering from cold and wind (including Chicherova and Vlasic).

PV: Spiegelburg won after clearing 465 in jump-off with Kyriakopoulou of Greece (they ended the tie at 460). Murer no-heighted at 450.
