The midsole has 4.5 millimeter geometry allowing an efficient landing, but is rigid because of its thickness, so has a rocker shape to offset the lack of flexibility – the shoe literally rolls through the gait. The ride takes some getting used to, but the transition is often pretty quick. The outersole is thin, full-length carbon rubber, no need for extra cushion here, and is grippy as well as durable. The Hoka focus is on cushioning and efficiency, with a premium on cushioning.
