SACRAMENTO (28-Jun) — Cory McGee, the University of Florida middle distance star who was the runner-up in the 1500m at the 2013 and 2014 NCAA Championships, has signed a professional management contract with Total Sports Management US of Johnson City, Tenn.  McGee is competing here at Hornet Stadium in the 1500m at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

“We think Cory is one of the dynamic distance girls coming out of this class,” said Chris Layne, Total Sports’ managing director, in an interview with Race Results Weekly.  He continued: “She was very careful with this process and, fortunately, we’re going to be working with another strong client.”

McGee, 22, from Pass Christian, Miss., has career best times of 4:06.67 for 1500m and 4:32.10 (indoors) for the mile.  Under Florida coaches Mike Holloway and Paul Spangler, she was the dominant middle distance runner of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) over the last two seasons.  In 2013, she won the SEC indoor mile title, was the runner-up in the 1500m outdoors, and took second at the NCAA championships.  Moreover, she finished third at the USA Outdoor Championships, and qualified for the IAAF World Championships where she finished 10th in her heat.  This year, she won the SEC indoor 3000m title, the outdoor title at 1500m, and was the runner-up to Shelby Houlihan in the NCAA 1500m.

Layne said he would help McGee select a coach and shoe company, and that he expected her to relocate from Gainesville, Fla., where she had attended school.

“I definitely feel like she’ll make a move, and she’s going to look at coaching options,” Layne explained.  “We’ll start to do that pretty quickly, and take our time and do our due diligence.  I think she’s definitely open to making a move and will likely leave Florida.”

Here in Sacramento, McGee competed in the 1500m heats yesterday.  She finished fifth in the first heat in 4:10.88 and advanced to Sunday’s final on time.
