Abbott has announced today, that it will be the first title sponsor of the World Marathon Majors, starting in 2015. This is a major boost for the World Marathon Majors team, and a great sports marketing story for the sport of marathoning.
Abbott, is a $60 billion company, based in Chicago, and is found in 150 countries, with health diagnostics products, nutrition products, and branded generic pharmacueticals in emerging markets, has signed on as the first title sponsor of the World Marathon Majors.
You know the WMM, the group of the six largest marathons on the globe, who anointed a male and female champion every two years, giving them $500,000 each, the largest prize purse in the sport. Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York, the six largest marathons in the world, banned together to promote the sport several years ago.
Abbott CMO Paul Magill, told RBR in an interview today, that he saw the World Marathon Majors as a wonderful fit as Abbott develops a global campaign to salute wellness, the pursuit of wellness and what can be achieved by such devotion to a program, such as training for a road race or marathon.
The new mantra at Abbott: “Life.To the Fullest.” That will be seen around the globe as Abbott promotes their support of healthy activities in general and the World Marathon Majors in particular.
What does this mean to WMM? Their patience on finding the right fit as a title sponsor is vindicated. Abbott does not conflict with other key sponsor categories, near and dear to each marathons’ heart and pocket book.
The sponsorship is four years, and begins in 2015. The first marathon in the WMM to see the sponsorship will be Tokyo Marathon, to be held on February 15, 2015.
