El declive del 1.500 en el atletismo español.

Cualquier aficionado al atletismo en todo el mundo cuando escucha los nombres de Fermín Cacho, José Luis González, José Manuel Abascal, Reyes Estévez, Andrés Díaz, José Antonio Redolat, Isaac Viciosa, Manuel Pancorbo y Juan Carlos Higuero, entre otros, reconoce a varios de los mejores mediofondistas de la historia mundial del atletismo – todos ellos españoles -, cuyos títulos y mejores marcas fueron obtenidas entre principios de la década de los 80 del siglo pasado y hasta los primeros años de la presente centuria.

La presencia en aquélla época de tantos destacados atletas del mismo pais en la élite mundial contrasta con la situación actual del 1.500 español estancado desde hace años en la mediocridad de resultados tanto por lo que respecta a títulos internacionales como posición de sus marcas en el ranking mundial.

Al margen de que sea justo reconocer que alguno de los ilustres atletas citados anteriormente, como es el caso de Fermín Cacho, eran unos superclase de los que aparecen de vez en cuando; lo cierto es que, desde mi punto de vista, los corredored españoles de 1.500 metros de la actualidad atesoran las mismas condiciones que los de antaño, si bien sus posibilidades de éxito habrian quedado reducidas por los siguientes factores principales:

1.La grave crisis económica en la que se ha visto inmerso el Estado español desde mediados del año 2007, con la consecuente de falta de recursos económicos tanto de carácter público y privado hacia nuestro querido deporte.

Dicha falta de recursos ha supuesto la desaparición de la “profesionalidad” en el atletismo español, puesto que ni las becas ni los esponsors son suficientes para que a un atleta de elite le compense dedicarse exclusivamente a entrenar y competir.

En el mismo sentido, la merma de recursos y el sacrificio que supone entrenar para estar en lo más alto y competir de tu a tu con los atletas de origen africano actuales dominadores de la especialidad, ha supuesto que mucho atletas con grandes marcas en las categorias juvenil y junior prefieran dedicarse a estudiar, incluso una buena parte de ellos ha decidido afiliarse a alguno de los centenares de equipos existentes en las “Universities” y “Colleges” de los Estados Unidos.

2. La escasa participación de nuestros mejores atletas de 1.500 metros en los principales Mitines internacionales.

Es cierto que en estos últimos dos años sus marcas o registros personales no les permiten por derecho acceder a una serie A de la Diamond League IAAF, pero también es cierto que en la mayoría de reuniones atléticas internacionales suelen programarse series B en las que también se utilizan liebres con la finalidad de que se obtengan – y así sucede en la práctica – marcas o registros importantes; y en ellas, los atletas españoles suelen brillar por su ausencia.

Desde mi punto de vista, dicha situación se vuelve en su contra cuando acuden a los Campeonatos Internacionales (major events) puesto que desde un primer momento se les observa una falta de confianza y de actitud positiva en competición, y tanto es así que cada vez son menos los atletas españoles que obtienen su acceso a una final en Campeonatos del Mundo o Juegos Olimpicos en la prueba de 1.500.

Si bien es cierto que, por un lado, nuestro mejor atleta en la actualidad Adel Mechaal, el atleta de Palamós de origen magrebí, ha solicitado una larga excedencia en su trabajo para dedicarse íntegramente a entrenar; y que, por otro lado, en el año 2015 el talentoso atleta catalán Marc Alcalá ha conseguido el título europeo sub 23; y que ello, nos deberia invitar a un cierto optimismo; el éxito de ambos atletas y de tantos otros como el madrileño Carlos Alonso y el balear David Bustos, en el próximo difícil año olímpico, tan sólo será posible si lo afrontan con un cambio de mentalidad, autoexigiéndose más confianza en sus posibilidades de éxito, única forma de obtener el pasaporte para poder entrar en la tan difícil elite mundial.
