Here’s our story on the 2014 Adrian Martinez Classic. It was a fun meet, and will be a fun meet tomorrow, June 1, in Adrian Martinez Classic.

In the bucolic environs of Concord, MA, the 2014 Adrian Martinez Classic was held. The rain and clouds cleared for several hours as a combination of age group events and elite events entertained the crowd of young runners, their parents and friends of the sport. A world leader in the women’s mile was run by Violah Lagat, the sister of Bernard Lagat. Violah Lagat took the mile from Morgan Uceny, as Lagat ran 4:29.43.

In the featured Adro Mile, a foursome broke away and gave the crowd four men under four minutes! Eric Finan, Hammish Cornish and Julian Oakley went by Leo Manzano as the four battled down the final straightaway, with Eric Finan winning the race in 3:58.73, Cornish with 3:58.74 and Julian Oakley in third in 3:58.89. Leo Manzano, fresh off his 3:52 mile at the NIke Pre Classic on Saturday, finished fourth in 3:59.31.
In the women’s 5000 meters, Amy Hastings ran the best race she has run in a year, in 15:25.94. Amy Hastings ran with the abandon we had not seen in her since 2012.
The Adrian Martinez Classic is a wonderful event run in honor of Adrian Martinez, who, while playing soccer, died of sudden cardiac arrest. The Adrian Martinez Classic serves as a fundraiser for the Adrian Martinez Scholarship Fund at Concord-Carlisle High school and for the Friends of CCHSTrack & Field.
The mother, father and sister of Adrian Martinez were at the meet. Angel Martinez, the CEO of the Deckers Corporation, is the father of the late Adrian Martinez. A gentle, creative and thoughtful soul, Angel Martinez and his family were greeted by family friends. Jim Van Dine, the President of HOKA ONE ONE was there, with Peter L.Thompson, to insure the meet went well. Besides his love of all things athletics, Peter’s British accent provides a sense of respectability to the announcing, with fun anecdotes and thoughtful comments on the sport. Jim Van Dine is the guiding spirit of HOKA ONE ONE, appointed by Angel Martinez, to build a cult brand into a real running brand. Van Dine, all smiles, looks at every detail. The HOKA ONE ONE signage, and shoe booth were there, like a meet from another era.
The support of the running industry was obvious as well.Reebok President Matt O’Toole, Saucony’s Freddy Doyle, Mark Bossardet, Brian Mahoney, former Reebok footwear guru Ed Lussier, and Tommy Ratcliffe, KIMbia manager, were all there to support the event, the cause and Adrian’s family. A picture of Van Dine, Martinez, Bossardet, and Lussier, all Reebok alums was being passed around later in the evening.
Angel stood with Mark Bossardet and I at the track for a bit, enjoying the events. He was especially taken by the Adro Mile, where Leo Manzano was fourth in a four man race under 4 minutes for the magical mile. ” I would love to see more events like this around the country. That is why we are sponsoring the 2 Mile Postal, this meet and our other events. We want to add some excitement to the sport.”
Years ago, in a conversation with one of my philosophy professors, a man who carried a nitroglycerine tablet constantly, I was told that when the professor died, he wanted a children’s playground built on top of his grave. He want frivolity, fun and activity to be how his life was memorialized. The Adrian Martinez Memorial honors the late Adrian with a celebration of movement, life and activity.

And that is how Adrian Martinez is being remembered. In an event that celebrates movement, and an active life, the Martinez Classic was a huge success. That Garrett O’Toole, a senior in high school, moved from ninth at the half mile to sixth at the finish, running 4:01.89, running the fastest time ever for a high school boy in New England, seems like a fitting way to memorialize a young man who loved his family, loved sports, and loved life.
And that, is how it should be.
