Stephen Kiprotich is the 2012 Olympic champion in the marathon. He is also the 2013 World Champion from hot and humid Moscow. After that, Stephen had some difficult back injuries. At the HASPA Hamburg Marathon, Stephen Kiprotich ran 2:07:31, in a valiant attempt to hold off Ethiopia’s Tsegaye Mekkonen, who ran 2:07:26. The HASPA Hannover Marathon took place on April 23, 2017.

Stephen is one of my favorite athletes. I have spoken to him over the years and admired his quiet thoughtfulness and determination to overcome his injuries, espcially his back. His pride for his country, Uganda, is what makes him so popular at home.

Race News Service, our partners for global marathon content coverage around the world, provided this interview, with special thanks to Andy Edwards and Joerg Wenig.
