RunBlogRun Deep Archives: David Oliver at the Pre Classic (May 2011), a video by the Shoe Addicts!

In the Stade Charlety, 15,000 fans enjoyed a fine evening of global track & field. Highlights were big upset in 110 meter hurdles, with Ronald Levy, Jamaica, winning in 13.05. Andrew Pozzi, GBR, missing British Trials, but impressing with PB of 13.14 in second. Garfield Darien, FRA, taking third in 13.15, Sergey Shubenkov taking fourth in 13.18. World indoor champ and Olympic champ Omar McLeod had a bad day in the office, in 13.41.

Sifan Hassan won the 1,500 meters in 3:57.10, with Faith Kipyegon in 3:57.51 and Gudaf Tsegay with PB of 3:59.54 and Angelicka Cichocka in PB of 4:01.61!

Upset in javelin with Johannes Vetter and a big throw of 88.74m, Jakub Vadlejch, CZE with PB of 88.02m and Thoams Rohler, world leader, Olympic champion, in 87.23m in third.

In the sprints, way too many DQs, and false starts. Kim Collins and Emmanuel Matadi out in 100 meters, and Ben Youssef Meite, CIV, wins in 9.99. Ramil Guliyev, TUR, ran 20.15 in a non descript 200 meters.

In the women’s 100 meters, Elaine Thompson ran a relaxed 10.91. Lijao Gong, CHN, called in the shot put, with 19.14 meter throw for the win.

Most competitive races?

Women’s steeplechase ahd Beatrice Chepkoech, Hyvin Kiyeng, Celliphine Chespol and Ruth Jebet. Ruth hit a barrier with three laps to go, and still ran 9:10.95. Five women under 9:11.08, with Emma Coburn trying to catch Jebet down the straight. Beatrice Chepkoech won in 9:01.69 to Kiyeng’s 9:06.00. After the race, Jebet was limping, obviously in much pain. Chepkoech and Kiyeng helped her get her shoe off.

On the men’s side, Mutaz Essa Barshim cleared 2.35m and he had daylight! His attempts at 2.39m was okay, and Bondarenko looked good at 2.32m.

Muktar Edris has one scary kick in the 3000 meters, winning in 7:32.31 over Ronald Kwemoi and Yomif Kejelcha. Kejelcha seems to shut down in final sprints, as he finished third. Kudos to Ben True, who raced here, finishing sixth in PB of 7:35.53, after leading in final lap.

And hats off to Nijel Amos, who seems back in shape. Those flailing arms remind me of Joe Cocker performing Cry Me a River or She Came in Through the bathroom window. Amos is a fine athlete, and with Mark Rowland’s help, he should continue to shake up the 800 meters. Nijel won here in 1:44.24.

Here are the results.
