DOHA NEWS

DOHA (QAT): After a series of near-misses at previous IAAF World Athletics Championships, Sifan Hassan finally broke through in Doha tonight, by stepping up to run only her second 10,000m race. The Dutch distance queen has had an exceptional year, setting both a world 5km record on the road and a world mile record on the track on the way to winning her first world title in 30:17.33. Lets see now whether she will contest 1500 m or 5000 m as next event.

DOHA (QAT): After initial disqualification Kyron McMaster was reinstated in the 400 m hurdles semifinals (48.40) and will run the finals on Monday. That means Estonian Rasmus Magi will not.

DOHA (QAT): 50 km walk was the slowest ever at World championships for men and in second edition also for women. It also was most probably last 50 km at World championships as the walking events should be shorter in the future (between 10 and 30 km). Eugene 2021 will not have 50 km walk anymore. Men had 28 finishers from 46, women 17 from 24.

DOHA (QAT): Nijel Amos was a late scratch from the 800m heats at the World Championships due to an calf injury.

DOHA (QAT): European champion Volha Mazuronak, who finished fifth in the marathon, was critical of the decision to stage the World Championships marathon at midnight, informs Reuters. “The humidity kills you. There is nothing to breathe. I thought I wouldn’t finish. It’s disrespect towards the athletes.”

DOHA (QAT): Kevin Mayer has said the athletes haven’t been made the priority in the decision to bring the World Championships to Doha, informs BBC Sport. “We can all see it’s a disaster, there is no-one in the stands, and the heat has not been adapted at all,” he said.

DOHA (QAT): Christian Coleman said he hasn’t been careless with his whereabouts after he was recently cleared for three missed tests, informs Reuters. “I haven’t been careless. I think I can be more mature about it and more diligent about it… Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody has typos,” he said.

DOHA (QAT): Tom Walsh has said throwing 22 metres is “another day at the office” this year and he feels in shape to defend his title in the shot put, informs stuff.co.nz. “A 22m throw last year was hard work but a 22m throw now is another day at the office and it feels a lot easier to do so I know there’s a lot more up my sleeve and I have full confidence that I can throw far enough to beat these guys,” he said.

DOHA (QAT) British pole vaulter Harry Coppell pulled out of the World Championships after aggravating a hip injury in warm-up.

DOHA (QAT): Members of the IAAF Council and the IOC Board led by their respective presidents, Sebastian Coe and Thomas Bach, visited the IAAF Heritage World Athletics Championships Exhibition in Doha on Saturday. The focus of the official visit was the long-term loan to the IAAF Heritage Collection of the spikes (right shoe), which Brazil’s Adhemar Ferreira da Silva wore when winning the 1956 Olympic Games triple jump title in Melbourne, Australia. Fittingly, the left shoe rests in The National Sports Museum at the Melbourne Cricket Ground where those Games took place.

DOHA (QATAR): Mondo and the IAAF announced that their partnership, which began in 1987, will continue until 2024. Mondo has renewed its contract as official IAAF World Athletics Series supplier in the ‘Athletics equipment and athletics tracks’ category for another five years. Mondo created a unique pink track at Khalifa International Stadium for the championships in Doha, supplying 17,000m2 of its premium MONDOTRACK WS, and is currently installing the athletics tracks for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

DOHA (QAT): The starting time for tonight’s (Sunday 28 September) women’s 20km race walk has been adjusted from 23:30 to 23:59 after consideration of the predicted weather conditions for the scheduled start. This evening the IAAF Medical Delegate analysed all available information on the likely temperatures and humidity and recommended a half-hour delay to the start to attain the best possible conditions for athletes during the race. The WBGT at midnight is expected to be 28C.
