Well, this was not a surprise. And, yes, the HASPA Hamburg Marathon did the right thing. The Covid-19 pandemic is challenging all the major events. This came out same day as 2020 Marine Corps Marathon was canceled.

Stay safe. Isolate.

Hamburg, July 20th. The major sporting events in Hamburg, which have been postponed until late summer and autumn 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has been raging since spring 2020, will no longer take place this year, but will be postponed until 2021. The City of Hamburg and the major organisers En Garde (German Horse Jumping and Dressage Derby Hamburg), MHV (Haspa Marathon Hamburg) as well as Ironman Germany (EuroEyes Cyclassics, WTS Triathlon Hamburg, Ironman Hamburg) have agreed on this after intensive talks.

Sports Senator Andy Grote said: “This decision is painful for all of us, but unfortunately unavoidable. I am impressed by the great energy of the organisers who have worked out modified concepts in order to be able to implemt the major sporting events in Hamburg under strict consideration of infection protection. As a result, however, we had to conclude that the legal framework for the staging of major events will remain very restricted at least until 31 October. The hygiene regulations that apply in any case and the necessary contact tracing would not have been guaranteed for events with many thousands of spectators, so that we had no other choice. All the more reason for us, together with the organisers, to do everything we can to ensure that next year’s major Hamburg sports events can take place in the Active City again as usual”.

Frank Thaleiser, Chief Organiser of the Haspa Marathon Hamburg explains: “First and foremost, I feel sorry for our participants, who have supported us not only morally but also financially right up to the end with their clear commitment to participate in September. But the decision to postpone the race further until next year is one that we have taken in partnership with the city and thus also represents a correct and important signal. In addition, our conceptual work was and is not in vain. We will take much of it with us in our planning for the spring.”

The new date for the 35th Haspa Marathon Hamburg is April 25, 2021.

Registration will start shortly!
