Thomas Bach is in a no win situation.
He is the mouthpiece of the IOC. He is the voice of the Olympic movement.
He is on the brink of havng to announce Tokyo going ahead, Tokyo going ahead in a pandemic state, or the Olympics could be cancelled.
I think it is 70/30 that the Olympics will happen in 20201. The issue is this, many, most Olympic fans will not go, will not be able to go without a vaccine.
The pandemic is teaching us this little lesson: Mother Nature can shut the hubris of modern humans. We can travel around the world in about 128 hours. So can a biological challenge.
The Olympic movement is huge, I am not sure that it can battle the pandemic.

TOKYO (JPN): IOC President Thomas Bach does not expect any countries to “opt out” of the Olympic and Paralympic Games due to the coronavirus pandemic, informs insidethegames.biz. “Athletes do not bear responsibility for the virus. If they test negative and follow the safety regulations, they should have the opportunity to participate. I also do not expect countries to opt out. All 206 National Olympic Committees affiliated with the IOC are determined and full of anticipation,” he said.
The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was today provided with interim reports on the situation of athletes in the Republic of Belarus and on the latest developments in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). https://t.co/C3R45Jk34F
