The Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava, from every angle, was a huge success. This year, in 2021, even with the pandemic, was no exception. A big performance in nearly every event, and some epic battles. EME News gives us some highlights and we celebrate them with great photos and social media. Enjoy!

Two European U20 records


OSTRAVA (CZE, May 19): At the 60th Golden Spike in Ostrava (WACT Gold), Uganda’s world half marathon champion Jacob Kiplimo moved to seventh on the world all-time 10,000m list with 26:33.93 WL courtesy of a super-fast closing 5000m of 13:06. His teammate Joshua Cheptegei fell short of the world 3000m record in the last race of the track but still emerged victorious in 7:33.24 WL ahead of Paul Chelimo in 7:41.69 and Ethiopia’s Getnet Wale won the 3000m steeplechase in a world lead of 8:09.47. Another standout result came in the men’s 800m with 18-year-old Max Burgin winning in a world lead and European U20 record of 1:44.14 by more than one second from Tony Van Diepen in 1:45.38 while teammate Keely Hodgkinson, 19, set a lifetime best of 1:58.89 and also European U20 record to win the women’s 800m. Also in the middle distances, Polish veteran Marcin Lewandowski won the men’s 1500m in 3:35.57 and Ethiopia’s Frewenyi Hailu was a surprise victor of the women’s 1500m in 4:04.20 PB ahead of Slovenia’s Marusa Mismas-Zrimsek in 4:07.50. World record-holder Genzebe Dibaba dropped out on the last lap.

Sha’Carri Richardson kept up her excellent start to the season with victory in the women’s 200m in 22.35 ahead of Blessing Okagbare in 22.59. Sub-44 400m competitor Fred Kerley handed Justin Gatlin a defeat in the 100m, 9.96 to 10.08 although Kerley had to settle for second in the 200m behind teammate Kenny Bednarek, 19.93 to 20.27. Elsewhere, Kirani James won the 400m in 44.74 and in-form Brit Jessie Knight set another PB of 54.74 in the 400m hurdles.

Vetter coming close to Zelezny MR


OSTRAVA (CZE, May 19): Johannes Vetter produced another incredible series in the javelin at the Golden Spike in Ostrava including a first round throw of 94.20m, a mark only surpassed by Vetter himself and Jan Zelezny. He followed that effort up with 91.33m in the second round and had three more throws over 88 metres. Christin Hussong made it a German double in the javelin with 66.56m ahead of home favourite Nikola Ogrodnikova’s 65.13m. Croatia’s Filip Mihaljevic handed European champion Michal Haratyk a defeat in the shot put, 21.58m to 21.30m, and Poland’s Malwina Kopron won the women’s hammer with 74.74m from Alexandra Tavernier (73.30m) and the returning world record-holder Anita Wlodarczyk (72.72m). Armand Duplantis cleared 5.90m on his European debut this season ahead of Sam Kendricks’ 5.85m and Hugues Fabrice Zango won the triple jump with 17.20m. Christian Taylor had to settle for fifth with 16.36m.
