Sifan Hassan sets a 10,000m WR on Sunday, June 6, 2021. That lasted two days!

Two days later, at the Ethiopian Olympic Trials, on June 8, 2021, Ethiopian Letensebet Gidey, the silver medalist at 10,000m from Doha WC in 2019, added the 10,000m WR to her world record list. Last fall, Letensebet ran 14:06.62 for a new 5000m WR. Tuesday, in Hengelo, Letensebet Gidey runs 29:01.03, over five seconds under the two day old WR!

We have included a few pictures, thanks to Global sports communications of Gidey’s WR, and are requesting more!

HENGELO (NED, Jun 8): Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey striked again with a beautiful performance. After breaking the 5000m world record in Valencia in October, she broke another world record in Hengelo during the Ethiopian Trials. Two days after Sifan Hassan at the same stadium she took the two days old world record by more than 5 seconds. Aided by pacemaker Jackline Rotich, Gidey produced a fantastic race by completing the 25-lap distance in a time of 29:01.03 (last lap 61.57). Running under the perfect circumstances inside the FBK Games stadium and aided by Wavelight Technology in the second half of the race, she now holds the world records on both the 5000m and the 10,000m. “What a special night, I am so proud that after the 5000m world record I am now the 10,000m world recordholder as well. In this Olympic year it is the perfect preparation,” she said in a release. Gidey is the first woman to hold both 5 and 10 k record in the same time since Ingrid Kristiansen 1986-1993. Behind her Tsigie Gebreselama 30:06.01 PB over Tsehay Gemechu 30:19.29 and Yalemzerw Yehualaw 30:20.77.
