2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships
Doha, Qatar

Women’s High Jump Final
1. Mariya Lasitskene (ANA) – 2.04
2. Yaroslava Mahuchikh (UKR) – 2.04 WU20R
3. Vashti Cunningham (USA) – 2.00 PB

Posted December 4, 2021.

2019 seems so long ago. This was the last time a real awards presser was done, without masks and pandemic protocals. In Doha, hot and humid, my son, Adam and I were there for the duration. Adam spent much of his time getting us good positions in the pressers, and I focused my questions on the medalists. I have found that the medal pressers give the athletes a chance to tell their story, and it seems appropriate to give them their moment in the sun. In Doha, however, many media were asking non distance runners about the the fiascos that happened during the championships.

Mariya and Yaroslava were pretty excited. Vashti was a bit more withdrawn. In the end, it was nine minutes of speaking with the three best high jumpers in the Doha WC in the long season that was 2019. My only observation is that, if Mariya, the finest high jumper in the world, could learn English, her sponsorship could open up. A super star in Russia, Lasitskene should be known and respected outside of her homeland.

Special thanks on recording the medal pressers to Adam Eder /The Shoe Addicts
