Yared Nuguse broke the American record for 3,000m on Friday night. The record he broke had been owned by Galen Rupp for nearly a decade.

Galen Rupp set the American record for the 3,000m indoors at the  X Galen Games on February 21, 2013. That was just one year after Galen had won the silver medal in the 10,000 meters in the London Olympics. The 3,000 meters is seven and one-half laps of a 400-meter track outdoors and fifteen laps on a 200m indoor track.

On January 27, 2023, at the Boston Terrier Classic, formerly the John Thomas Terrier Classic (John Thomas was the first American over seven feet in the high jump), Yared Nuguse, fit and confident, ran 7:28.24, nearly two seconds faster than two time Olympic medalist Galen Rupp’s 3000m AR of 7:30.16. Last year, at the same meet, Yared ran a 7:38.13, now which is some serious improvement.

AMERICAN RECORD!!💥💥

Yared Nuguse opened up his season in stunning fashion at the John Thomas Terrier Classic, storming to a PB of 7:28.74 to win the men’s 3000m!

Yared Nuguse trains with the On Athletics Club. He is coached by Dathan Ritzenhein. The club consists of some of the most promising middle and long-distance runners in the world. Dathan, who retired from his elite running career just a few years ago, has taken that energy and enthusiasm and is building one of the finest running clubs in the country.

The video, courtesy of Citius Mag and On Running is a confirmation of the level of training that this team has put together. After a 1,600m, then, 3 x 2000 meters, the team of seven all ran a mile in 3:57-3:58!

The On Athletics Club is developing a reputation of top athletes, providing the opportunity to build fitness and confidence, with strong coaching and support, and can compete with the very best in the world.

Yared Nuguse is pretty typical of the athletes that Dathan Ritzenhein has brought into his program. Yared was a fine runner at Notre Dame, and made the Olympic team in 2021, but did not compete, due to a quad injury. Promising, focused and not finished with his running, Yared Nuguse is showing that he has real talent, real focus and has found a program that makes sense for him.

Check out the video on the On running workout.

This is the result of heat 1 of the 3,000 meters from the Boston Terrier Classic on January 27, 2023.

We at RunBlogRun congratulate Yared Nuguse on his first American record! A record of any type requires the perfect storm: great fitness, confidence, support from your team, and a fine competition. Yared had them all and now he is the new American record holder for the 3,000m indoors at 7:28.24!
