The Stockholm Diamond League is one of your editor’s favorite meets. The old track, the fans, the wonderful Swedish weather and the plethora of fine athletes who have competed in Stockholm are amazing. Thanks to EME News, we have an event by event review. 

Mondo 628 WR, Wanyonyi 1:41.95 WL, Benjamin 46.54 WL, Almgren 12:44.27 ER
STOCKHOLM (SWE, Jun 15): Mondo Duplantis highlighted the BAUHAUS-Galan Wanda Diamond League with his 12th world record, however first on home soil. After securing a victory at 600cm, he set the bar straight up to the record height at 628cm, and managed to clear it at his first attempt. Sold out stadium was more than happy. The successful Swedish evening was completed by a unique performance of Anders Almgren in the 5000m, crowned by a new European record of 12:44.27. Another two world leads were delivered in the men’s 800m and 400m hurdles. Also another six meeting records, including Julien Alfred’s 10.75 in the 100m and Femke Bol’s European lead of 52.11 in the 400m hurdles. Next Wanda Diamond League meeting is scheduled for Paris on 20 June.

Event by event reviews

Women

100m (D+): Big season’s best and meeting record of 10.75 (0.9) for Julien Alfred ahead of Dina Asher-Smith (10.93) and Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith (11.00).

200m (non-DL): Clear win for Liberia’s Thelma Davies in a marginally wind-aided 22.41w (2.2)ahead of Spain’s Jaël Bestué in 22.69w.

400m: Back-to-back Diamond League wins for Isabelle Whittaker in 49.78 with Henriette Jæger second again in 50.17. Another national record for Chile’s Martina Weil in fifth in 50.39.

800m: Olympic 1500m bronze medallist Georgia Hunter-Bell stormed down the home straight for victory in 1:57.66 ahead of Mary Moraa (1:57.83) and Prudence Sekgodiso (1:58.00).

3000m (D+): Australia’s Linden Hall outsprints Uganda’s Sarah Chelangat, 8:30.01 to 8:31.27 NR. Brilliant run from 19-year-old Brit Innes FitzGerald who goes to second on the European all-time U20 list with 8:32.90, in a race with top 7 finishers setting their PB.

100m hurdles: Olympic finalist Grace Stark from the United States wins in a meeting record of 12.33 (1.4) ahead of Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent (12.37) and Dutchwoman Nadine Visser (12.49), Italian NR for sixth Giada Carmassi (12.69 NR).

400m hurdles: Yet another win for Femke Bol with a meeting record and European lead of 52.11, the seventh fastest time of her career. Dalilah Muhammad was back under 53 seconds with 52.91.

High jump: Nicola Olyslagers clears 2.01m to defeat world record-holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh at 1.99m. Mahuchikh had one attempt at 2.03m after two failures at 2.01m.

Long jump: Tara Davis-Woodhall equals Galina Chistyakova’s long-standing meeting record of 7.05m (1.3) to take the victory ahead of Larissa Iapichino with w6.90m (3.6), also 6.85m (1.0).

Discus (non-DL): Germany’s Kristen Pudenz produced a winning throw of 64.85m on her first attempt, ahead of Jordine van Klinken (64.33m). World champion Laulauga Tausaga was last with 59.79m.

Men

100m (non-DL): Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati wins in 10.18 (0.9) ahead of South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana in 10.23.

200m: Another win after Oslo for Cuba’s Reynier Mena in 20.05 (2.0) ahead of Liberia’s Joseph Fanbulleh in 20.32.

800m: Emmanuel Wanyonyi was back to his best with a world lead of 1:41.95. Fast times all around with Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati finishing quickly to take second in 1:42.27. World indoor champion Josh Hoey was third in a PB of 1:42.43 with France’s Gabriel Tual and Algeria’s Slimane Moula also breaking 1:43 with 1:42.72 and 1:42.77 PB respectively.

1500m (non-DL): Samuel Pihlström wins at home in 3:31.53 ahead of Italy’s Federico Riva in 3:32.17. Lifetime bests for Denmark’s Kristian Uldbjerg Hansen (3:32.60) and Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui (3:32.63) in third and fourth respectively.

5000m: Ten minutes after Armand Duplantis broke the world pole vault record, Andreas Almgren took down the European 5000m record with victory in 12:44.27 MR. Ethiopia’s Kuma Girma (12:57.46) and Australia’s Ky Robinson (12:58.38 PB) also broke the 13 minute-barrier. Dutch record of 13:02.43 for Mike Foppen in fourth.

3000m steeple (non-DL): Lifetime best for Germany’s Karl Bebendorf in 8:11.81 ahead of New Zealand’s Geordie Beamish (8:13.86). Pre-race favourite Getnet Wale was fifth in 8:15.57.

400m hurdles (D+): Rai Benjamin gets his revenge with a meeting record and world lead of 46.54 ahead of Alison dos Santos (46.68) with Karsten Warholm fading uncharacteristically to third in 47.41.

Pole vault (D+): He does it again! Armand Duplantis clears yet another world record of 6.28m on his first attempt at home in Stockholm, Marschall second (5.90m). It was his dream to achieved WR in this stadium and now is fulfilled, his 12th WR.

Discus: European champion Kristjan Čeh wins with 69.73 (his 6th win in a row since Zagreb meeting) ahead of world champion Daniel Ståhl who improves to 69.53 SB in the sixth round.
