OSLO (NOR, Jun 12): Home hero Karsten Warholm crowned the Bislett Games Diamond League with a world best of 32.67 in the 300m hurdles. He improved his own mark (33.05), and it is also a meet and DL record in a the new official DL discipline. WA plans at the end of the year most probably ratify first World record in the event. This result has now the biggest chance. Faith Cherotich posted a world lead of 9:02.60 in the steeplechase, and four other outdoor world leads have been achieved in both triple jump events and men’s 5000 m and mile, while Cherotich and Mondo Duplantis added meeting records. Sold-out stadium saw four surprising debut wins by Isabella Whittaker, Reynier Mena, Isaac Nader and Nico Young. And legendary Dalilah Muhammad recorded her first DL title since 2018. The next stage of the Wanda Diamond League is scheduled for Sunday in Stockholm.

Event by event reviews

Women

100m (Diamond+): Alfred stormed to 10.89 (1.1) to win over Ta Lou-Smith (11.00).

400m (D+): Victory for Whittaker in 49.58 in her premiere DL appearance, her second best time ever and outdoor PB, outsprinting fast running home star Jæger (49.62 NR) at the finish line.

3000m steeple: Cherotich clocked 9:02:60 WL/MR, and again defeated Yavi (9:02.76), this time after pacing the second half of the race.

400m hurdles: First DL title since 2018 for Muhammad (53.34) and great satisfaction also for second Emma Zapletalová (54.44, Tokyo standard) after three years of injuries, Hall fell on the last hurdle.

Triple jump: Pérez Hernández leaped to an outdoor world lead of 14.72 (1.3) in the third series, and it was enough to win ahead of Ricketts, who improved to 14.57 (0.0) in the final round.

Javelin throw: Kitaguchi advanced to the final round in fifth series only (64.63) and got her first DL win of the season after ankle injury over Vilagoš (63.78).

Men

200m: Debut DL title for Cuban Reynier Mena, living in Portugal, in 20.20 (1.5) ahead of  Mumenthaler (20.27 PB) and De Grasse (20.33).

800m: Wanyonyi took the lead at 500m and resisted the pressure of his rivals on the home straight to finally win in second fastest time of the season 1:42.78 ahead of Attaoui (1:42.90), Burgin was DNS.

Dream Mile: Nader shocked the rest of the field on the final straight and won his first DL title in a new Portugal’s NR and outdoor WL of 3:48.25 clearly ahead of young guns Myers (3:48.87) and Nillessen (3:49.02 PB); national records also for Germany (Farken 3:49.12), Sweden (Pihlström 3:49.70), Italy (Riva 3:49.72) and Belgium (Verheyden 3:50.67) as top 11 broke Tokyo standard.

5000m (D+): Another winning DL debut by American wonder Nico Young, smashing the rivals with powerful 200m sprint in an outdoor WL/NR and personal best of 12:45.27, Mehary finished second in a second fastest U20 time ever (12:45.93) ahead of K.Girma (12:46.41 PB) and Mills (12:46.59, EL and NR for Great Britain); national record also for Switzerland (Lobalu 12:50.87) with top 13 sub-13:00.

300m hurdles: Warholm stormed to a all-time world best of 32.67 in a new discipline, clearly defeating Benjamin (33.22) and dos Santos (33.38) in a Big-3 clash.

Pole vault (D+): Duplantis overcame the crisis when clearing 603 on third attempt and also added a meeting record of 615 before retiring in cooler weather, Karalis second (582).

Triple jump: Jamaica Scott decided with his first attempt to first DL win and personal best of 17.34 (1.1), Pichardo second with 17.06 (0.5).

Triathlon (non-DL): Rooth won a two-days triathlon with 2799 points, posting 767 (0.3) in the long jump, 14.07 (-0.8) in the 110m hurdles and 67.89 in the javelin. Hausenberg second (2685) and Ehammer third (2677).
