The community of track & field athletics is deeply saddened by the news that Dr . Joe Vigil, the globally respected and

renowned USA coach, physiologist and coach educator, died on 19 July 2025. He was 95.
Joe Vigil was born in Antonio, Colorado, near the New Mexico border on November 25, 1929. From humble
beginnings he committed himself to a life-long relationship with education that initially led to achieving a PhD in
exercise physiology from the University of New Mexico. Subsequent post-graduate studies at Louisiana State
University and Toledo University led to his appointment as Head Coach and full-time Professor of exercise physiology
at Adams State University.
As a collegiate coach Joe Vigil was at Adams State University for nearly 30 years, from 1965-1993. While at Adams
State he led a program that won 19 NAIA National Team Championships and produced 87 individual champions and
425 All-Americans.

Most notably, his 1992 cross-country team won with a ‘perfect score’ of 15 points, the only one ever achieved in a
US collegiate national championship. He was named National Coach of the Year on 14 different occasions. Coach
Vigil, who always emphasized the importance of education in life, was as proud of maintaining a 95% graduation rate
for his student-athletes during his collegiate coaching career as he was of any victory on the track or over the country.
It was during his tenure at Adams State that Joe Vigil commenced a long-term relationship as a coaching advisor with
Reebok that ran from 1986 to 1999. Reebok at that time was seeking to establish greater credibility as a performance
brand and Vigil’s status within the coaching community and his roles within TAC/USA provided unique insights. Coach
Vigil was interested in establishing a High-Altitude Training Camp and eventually chose Mammoth Lakes for this
project that was initially funded by TAC/USA.
Being exposed to elite level post-collegiate athletes through his Reebok work was probably the impetus for Joe Vigil
shifting his focus to coaching elite post-collegiate athletes. In the long-term, it was instrumental in the success of the
USA’s 2004 Athens Olympic Marathon Medalists, Deena Kastor, who gained bronze and Meb Keflezighi, who achieved
silver .
Joe Vigil continued to enjoy great success in cross-country, with two of the elite athletes he coached, Deena Kastor
and Pat Porter, dominating the USA domestic scene, both winning 8 senior na5onal cross-country titles. Coach Vigil
was Head Coach of the 1997 United States Pan-American Games Team and in 1998, he was the long-distance running
coach for the United States Olympics Team. Additionally, he was USA Team Coach at seven World Cross-Country
Championships.
From the very beginning of his coaching career Coach Vigil was active in sharing his knowledge and expertise with
others. In the early 1980s it was natural that he became one of the founders of the USTAF (then, TAC/USA) Coach
Education Program. He wrote the initial materials, specifically for running, for the various levels of the courses; he
trained others as instructors; and he delivered education at every level from recreational to Olympian. He was a
natural educator, gifted with an empathetic manner that was always encouraging. When Coach Vigil stopped
coaching at Adams State, he was able to devote more of his time to his clinics, camps and speaking engagements.
Over a 50-year period, thousands of athletes and coaches were educated and mentored by Coach Vigil.
In 2015, Coach Vigil was honored as the second-ever recipient of USA Track & Field’s ‘Legend Coach Award’ , which
recognized his astonishing contributions and breadth of involvement in the sport. Previously, he was honored with
inclusion in the USTFCCA Hall of Fame among almost a dozen other halls of fame.
It is open said that one can never be a prophet in your own country but Joe Vigil managed to achieve this, to be a
‘prophet’ in the USA and s5ll be recognized as a ‘prophet’ abroad. He lectured and coached internationally in 27
countries around the world. In 2018 the IAAF formally recognized his coaching in a global context when he received
the prestigious IAAF ‘Coaching Achievement Award’.
In 1676, Isaac Newton stated, “If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.” Joe Vigil
always ‘saw far’ by drawing information and inspiration from research and from ‘in the field’. Within the international
middle-distance and long-distance running community Joe has been recognized, for many years, as one of the
‘International Giants’ upon whose shoulders so many other coaches now stand.
Joe Vigil’s 1995 book Road to the Top is considered by many to be essential reading, as it offers insights into his training methodology and
the science behind it. More recently, Chasing Excellence (2020) by Pat Melgares tells the story of Coach Vigil’s life, coaching successes, and his Philosophy.
Dr Joe Vigil’s contribution and impact on the running and coaching communities is one that will surely stand the test of time. His name has
entered the pantheon of great running coaches and his visible legacy lies in the ongoing work and achievements of all those whose lives he
has touched.
We wish to pass on sincerest condolences to Dr Joe Vigil’s wife, Caroline and family, friends, and colleagues.
