NOVUNA GB & NI TEAM SELECTED FOR THE WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN TOKYO
Great Britain will send a team of up to 66 to the World Championships in Tokyo. The fourteen athletes marked with an * have until 1 September to achieve the qualifying standard. There is also the possibility that they could be offered an invitation by World Athletics based on ranking but British Athletics often declines such invitations. Remember too that GB selection policy is first two at trials with third place at the discretion of the selectors.
Headlines include:
Olympic 1500m bronze medalist, Georgia Hunter Bell, who was considering doubling up has opted to run the 800 and compete with training partner, Keely Hodkinson.
It is great to see Jazmin Sawyers back after that horrendous injury.
Selection for Tokyo caps a magnificent year for 19-year-old Innes FitzGerald.
Amy Hunt only made the team for the relay in Paris, a year later she is selected for 100, 200 and relay.
This caps a great year for Elise Thorner who ran a steeplechase PR in Oslo.
There is a first senior outdoor championship selection for Joy Eze who was featured in RunBlogRun earlier this year.
There are 4 athletes in the men’s 1500 as Josh Kerr, as 2023 world champion, gets a wild card.
It is great to see the 2022 world champion at 1500, Jake Wightman, selected after missing the 2023 Worlds and 2024 Olympics with injury.
Ben Pattison took bronze in Budapest but has had a rough year, His selection is well deserved.
