Jess Hull, the Oregon grad, ran well at the University, competed in cross-country, Indoor and outdoor. Jess then raced for the NIKE Union Athletic Club, coached by Pete Julian.
A few years ago, Jess decided to move back to Australia, leave the Union Club and was coached by her father. That season, Jess continued to show real talent and improvement.
To me, the race that did it was when Jess stayed with Faith Kipyegon longer than anyone at the Paris Diamond League in 2024, prior to the Paris Olympics. Kipyegon broke the world record in 3:49.07 at the Paris DL on July 7, 2025. For three and one half laps, the gutsy Aussie held on, and finished second in 3:55.97 for the 1,500 meters, a new Australian record.
In Paris in 2024, Jess Hull took the Olympic silver in the 1,500m. In Tokyo in 2025, Jess took the WC bronze in the 1,500m. She owns the 800m, 1000m, 1,500m, mile and 3,000m records for Oceania and short track for the mile and 3,000 meters.
In January, Jess Hull was part of the Aussie Mixed XC relay that took WC gold, a huge upset.
At the recent MIllrose Games presser, held on January 30, Jess Hull was asked by Jeff Benjamin, Senior writer for Runningnetwork/RunBlogRun, if there was a Turning point in her racing career, or a race that told her she could be elite.
This is how Jess responded:
