In her second Meet in Africa, Gabby Thomas raced in the epic Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya. The Kip Keino Classic, held in honor of the great Kip Keino, who greeted many of the athletes at the meet (April 24).
The stadium was a celebration of all things Kenyan, all things track and field, and Gabby Thomas was well-received. Gabby took her second double on the tour, winning the 100 meters in 11.01, into a headwind of -1.1 m/s. Gabby knew she was racing fit, as she came within 0.01 of her personal best!
The 200 meters was fantastic. Pushed to the very end by training partner Camille Sturgis. Gabby put in the effort, with a strong finish, running 21.89 seconds, breaking the African Continental All-Comers Women’s record for 200 meters, previously held by Sh’a Carri Richardson. Watching Gabby Thomas race the 100 meters and 200 meters is always a treat. In these 200 meters, Gabby Thomas came off the turn in second and battled Sturgis to the finish, with both under 22 seconds over the furlong.
After the 200 meters, Gabby Thomas spoke to the media and noted, “It was great. I am happy with my times…You can not control the conditions in sport. The goal is to keep winning. Focus on winning, and the times will come.”
The 2026 Kip Keino Classic was held on April 24 at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya.
