Women’s 100m
The women’s 100m was won by Zoe Hobbs (New Zealand) in 10.93, with Amy Hunt (England) second in 10.98 and Torrie Lewis (Australia) in 10.99. Imani Lansiquot (England) was fourth in 11.02. The torrential rain put paid to any hopes of a really fast time. In the semi-finals, no one went under 11 seconds.
Amy Hunt, a 200m silver medallist in the 2025 Worlds, continued her excellent form to finish second but at a cost. She lost three of her acrylic nails on the starting blocks. “It was pretty gross on the start line,” she said. “My fingers were underwater, but you just have to roll with the punches at champs.”
Finishing just one hundredth of a second outside her personal best was a great achievement in the circumstances, but she loved the competition as she explained: “I love a head-to-head, I did really well to beat Zoe in the semis but she’s such a formidable athlete, so I’m really happy to come away with silver, very close to my personal best in these very Glaswegian conditions.
To be bringing medals back from every Champs is something I’m really proud of.”
Imani Lansiquot, who has relocated to Italy to train with Amy in Marco Airale’s group, finished fourth in a season’s best of 11.02, just three-hundredths of a second outside the podium places. Lansiquot told me that she is loving the new environment where she is “pushed to my limit in every training session”.
Hunt added: “It almost makes me emotional. I am so proud of that girl (Imani). I’ve seen first-hand the amount of work she puts in, the amount of grit she has; she’s such a fighter. I love going training with her every day; we have a little book swap, and we watch Twilight together.
She is such an amazing person to train with. She really inspires me every day, so for her to come away with fourth is just incredible.”
Amy, with a degree in English Literature from Cambridge University and a specialization in Renaissance, spends a lot of her days off in Italian museums. Imani, a graduate of King’s College, London, is a budding playwright – sounds quite an intellectual training group!
Hunt is arguably a better 200m runner than 100 but has opted to run only the 100 at the Commonwealths because she has the European Champs in 10 days.
