Eseme 9.83 and Hobbs 10.93, Games records

GLASGOW (GBR, Jul 28): Sensational 100 m men’s final in rain highlighted day two of athletics at the Commonwealth Games at Scotstoun Stadium. Emmanuel Eseme won for Cameroon in a fast 9.83 (+1.3) Games record, NR, and the third fastest of the year/third best ever African. He clocked his first NR of the evening in the semifinals, 9.89 (0.0). Lachlan Kennedy was second with an Oceanian record 9.85, and NCAA/Pre winner Kayinsola Ajayi was third in 9.90, as he was leading at the 60 m mark (6.37). In fourth, Gift Leotlela 9.91 was not enough for a medal, and in fifth, Jeremiah Azu 10.03.

Similarly sensational was the women’s 100 m final on the wet track, as Zoe Hobbs improved the Oceanian record to 10.93 (+1.0). Second was Amy Hunt 10.98, and third was Torrie Lewis, with a national record for Australia of 10.99; close fourth was Imani Lansiquot 11.02.

The high jump was interrupted due to heavy rain; later it was restarted, and Australian favorites dominated. Eleanor Patterson cleared in wet conditions 196 in her third attempt (GR equaled, tried at 2 meters) over Nicola Olyslagers 193. Bronze for Temitope Adeshina 190 over Lamara Distin 187.

World and Olympic winner Camryn Rogers dominated the hammer with Games records 74.38 in 2nd and 74.91 in the last round. Silver for Lauren Bruce, 69.82.  Kate O´Connor leads heptathlon after opening day with 3731 points ahead of Jade O´Dowda 3682.
