Kiprono 7:28.28 CR/U20WL, Deleon 44.47 CR

EUGENE (USA, Aug 7): Kenya’s Emmanuel Kiprono produced an incredible solo race at world record pace to win the 3000m at the World Athletics U20 Championships in 7:28.28 CR/U20WL, just 0.09sec shy of Yomif Kejelcha’s U20 WR. Frenchman Alois Abraham finished second (7:47.79), ahead of Ojiro Honda of Japan (7:48.49 U20NR).

Jayden Deleon of USA improved to a new Championship record of 44.47 in the 400m, winning from Quincy Wilson (44.62) and South Africa’s Leendert Koekemoer (44.96).

Michael-Andre Edwards of Jamaica saved himself in the triple jump final with his third attempt, then exploded in the final series to 17.08 (1.1) U20WL, pushing Miles Nesmith of USA to second with 16.79 (1.0) PB; China’s Wang Zhuoyue finished third with 16.36 (0.9).

Overwhelming javelin throw favorite Jan-Hendrik Heymans of South Africa led from the start and highlighted his performance with 80.50 U20WL in the last series, winning from India’s Ashish Yadav (74.09) and Addison James of Dominica (73.89 U20NR). China’s Chen Jiawei was also leading from the opening series and won the hammer with 79.16 ahead of Kayden Hulet of USA (77.55 PB) and Briton Wyatt Larkins (75.38 PB). Le’Ezra Brown clocked 12.82w (2.7)

in the 110m hurdles (99cm) semifinals, Japan’s Jeremy Koga in 12.95 (0.3) U20AR, tying 2nd in all-time lists, and Anthony Johnsen of Norway in 13.07 (0.9) U20EL/NR, 3rd European all-time, won the other two semis.

Gary Card, who was reinstated to the 200m semifinals after being originally disqualified in heats, advanced to the final finishing third in his semifinal (20.64) behind the American winner Blake Hamilton in 20.38 (-0.5), Tate Taylor was faster in 20.34 (0.4) and Japan’s Tomoro Ide 20.63 (0.5) in another semi with European U20 medallist Pedro Afonso of Portugal also advancing (20.66 U20NR).

Frenchman Mael-Bephassou Lannurien leads the decathlon after the first day with 4258 points (212 PB in the high jump), ahead of Sweden’s Liam Belo Da Silva (4159, 215 =CDB in the high jump), and Nashon Pkiach was the fastest in the 800m semifinals (1:45.82 PB).
