Tate Taylor announces himself with 9.94 World U20 triumph in Eugene

Tate Taylor came into the World U20 Championships with plenty of attention around his name, and by the end of the men’s 100m final at Hayward Field, he had given the athletics world a performance that will be difficult to forget.

The American stormed to a 9.94s personal best to win the title, holding off Jamaica’s Gary Card and South Africa’s Marko Ferreira in a final packed with some of the fastest young sprinters in the world. Ferreira claimed bronze in 10.16s, while Card added another major medal to a season in which he had already broken 10 seconds.

Taylor’s victory felt like the next chapter of something that had already started in Eugene earlier this season. At the Prefontaine Classic on the same Hayward Field track, he gave people a glimpse of what his speed could become when he defeated Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo over 200m

The World U20 final gave him another opportunity to show that his talent can stand up under championship pressure.

Taylor did not produce the sharpest start of the field, yet once he moved through his transition, his race began to open up. His stride became longer, his body remained relaxed, and his dreadlocks flew behind him as he moved away from the athletes around him. By the closing meters, the race had become his to finish, and he powered through the line with a new personal best and a world title.

For a 19-year-old still working out the next stage of his career, the performance creates an exciting question about what comes next.

The World U20 Championships have introduced several athletes who later became major names at senior level. Letsile Tebogo won the 100m title in Cali in 2022 before becoming an Olympic champion, while Bayanda Walaza claimed the title in 2024 and continued South Africa’s growing sprint story. Noah Lyles also won a World U20 title earlier in his career before developing into one of the leading sprinters of his generation.

Taylor now joins that list of champions, and the challenge ahead will be turning one outstanding championship into the beginning of a long senior career.

Ferreira left Eugene with a bronze medal and an understanding of what championship sprinting demands at this level. He had spoken confidently before the final about his belief that he could challenge for the title, and afterward he admitted that Taylor’s race affected his own execution.

“Tate did not really have a great start in the heats and semis, but after I saw that he had a great start, I kind of tightened up, and the pressure got to me,” Ferreira said. “I wasn’t able to execute my race, but I have learned a lesson.”

That lesson could prove valuable for a South African sprinter who is still at the beginning of his own journey and has already shown this season that he belongs among the fastest U20 athletes in the world.

Card also left the track with a positive outlook despite missing out on the gold medal. The Jamaican entered the championship as the only athlete in the field who had run under 10 seconds this season, and he believes there is still plenty more to come as he continues developing.

“I have done pretty well,” Card said. “I’m sure that it’s going to be great for me in the future. I do not worry about my execution. I just need to keep on improving.”

A few moments earlier, the women’s 100m final had delivered another huge result for the United States as Mia Maxwell produced one of the best races of her young career to defeat Jamaica’s Shanoya Douglas.

Maxwell clocked 11.14s to take the world title, while Douglas finished second in 11.17 after arriving in Eugene as the world U20 leader and one of the strongest favorites in the championship. Italy’s 16-year-old Kelly Ann Doualla Edimo continued her impressive rise by taking bronze in 11.27.

Maxwell kept her approach simple throughout the championship, and after the final she explained that execution had been at the center of everything.

“I just had to go execute, show the world I am the best in this event, and I’m glad I was able to do it,” she said.

Douglas had dominated much of the season and accepted the result as another part of her development. She immediately turned her attention to the 200 meters, an event she clearly believes can still bring her a gold medal in Eugene.

“I couldn’t have done anything more,” Douglas said. “I felt that there were still parts in the race that I did not really execute well, but I’ve won most of my races this year, and this is just going to be a lesson. I’m going to come back in the 200m. It’s my baby.”

The night eventually belonged to Taylor and Maxwell, who gave the United States a clean sweep of the two 100m titles and left Hayward Field with two of the biggest wins of the championships.
