Battocletti 3:57.54 NR, M. Alekna 71.50 MR
BELLINZONA (SUI, Aug 30): Nadia Battocletti sped to an Italian 1500m record of 3:57.54 for victory at the GalAthletics Bellinzona (WACT Silver) with 6630 spectators. Battocletti led four athletes under the 4:00 barrier, with Addison Wiley (3:58.96 PB) and Aster Areri (3:59.54) taking second and third, respectively, with Joceline Wind breaking 4:00 for the first time in fourth in a 3:59.79 PB.
World record-holder Mykolas Alekna was also in excellent form in the men’s discus, producing throws of 71.50m and 71.07m for victory over Olympic champion Roje Stona with 68.14m, while European champion Jorinde Van Klinken won the women’s discus with 66.86m over United States’ Cierra Jackson (65.41m). In other field events, double European champion Angelica Moser cleared 4.77m on home soil for victory over Sandi Morris and Hana Moll with 4.67m, and Ju’Vaughn Harrison cleared 2.28m on his third attempt for victory in the men’s high jump.
On the track, Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi won a strong men’s 100m in 9.91 (0.0) from Ronnie Baker (9.94) and Akani Simbine (9.95), and the United States’ Tamari Davis won the women’s 100m in 11.09 (-0.5). Rayniah Jones won the women’s 100m hurdles in a meeting record of 12.44 (0.7) from Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds (12.53) and world champion Ditaji Kambundji (12.71), and world record-holder Ja’Kobe Tharp won the 110m hurdles in 13.15 (0.0).
Qatar’s Bassem Hemeida won the 400m hurdles in a 47.56 PB over Caleb Dean (47.98), and world indoor champion Christopher Morales Williams won a good quality 400m in 44.44 from South Africa’s Zakithi Nene (44.54) and Khaleb McRae (44.62). There was also a French double in the 800m: Louey Ouerrat won the men’s race in a 1:43.57 PB/MR ahead of Gabriel Tual (1:44.34) and Renelle Lamote just held off Agathe Guillemot in the women’s 800m, 1:58.55 to 1:58.65 PB, with Gabriela Gajanová third (1:58.76). On her debut, Myrte Van der Schoot won the ‘B’ race in 2:01.08.
