Scott Reid, in a copyrighted article in the Orange Country Register, wrote that USATF and Mt.SAC are nearing an agreement for Mt.San Antonio College to host both the Men’s and Women’s 10,000 meters, the heptathlon and the decathlon about four weeks prior to the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which will be held for all of the other track & field events (100m-5,000m, field events) at the University of Oregon.
Mt.SAC rebuilt the famous Holmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, CA in 2020. Originally, Mt.SAC was to host the 2020 Olympic Trials, but USATF reopened the bidding, and Hayward Field, with the new stadium, hosted the Olympic Trials in 2021 after the Olympics were delayed by one year due to COVID.
Hosting the 10,000 meters and multi-events at Mt. SAC would give potential team members four more weeks to recover before the LA 2028 Olympics.
While the contracts are not signed, indications from USATF and Mt. SAC suggest this is looking like a nearly done deal.
It would be very nice to see part of the Olympic Trials in Los Angeles in 2028. At the 2024 Olympic Trials, in a press conference with Casey Wasserman, CEO of LA 2028, and Max Siegel, CEO of USATF, Mr. Wasserman was not very positive about hosting the 2028 Trials.
This seems like a great compromise for the distance runners and multi-eventers. It gives them a chance to compete in Los Angeles and four more weeks to recover from their arduous Trials efforts. We complement USATF and Mt.SAC for playing well together.
