NYC MARATHON FLASH-BACKS

NEW YORK CITY (USA): Olympic champion Sifan Hassan admitted she struggled on the hills on her debut in the New York Marathon, informs NOS. “I really thought I’d injured myself. My thighs, honestly, I could barely lift my knees. I couldn’t do any hills…I hadn’t done much hill training. After Sydney, it was mainly tempo training. Maybe that needs to change,” she said.

NEW YORK CITY (USA): Reigning champion Abdi Nageeye dropped out of the New York Marathon due to hamstring and hip problems, informs NOS. “For my health, I want to run a few more marathons so I had to make that decision [top drop out]. I can look back with pride. This was my fifth time, and I finished fifth, fourth, third, and first,” he said.

NEW YORK CITY (USA): After running 2:24:45 in her marathon debut, Jessica Warner-Judd became the first British woman to run sub-2:00 for the 800m and sub-2:25 for the marathon. Notable other athletes to have achieved this include Sifan Hassan, Tigst Assefa and Genzebe Dibaba.

NEW YORK CITY (USA): German Silva, winner of the New York City Marathon in 1994 and 1995, competed in yesterday’s edition. The Mexican finished in 3:12:56, aged 57.

NEW YORK CITY (USA): The World Athletics Heritage Plaque was awarded posthumously to Fred Lebow, the late founder of the New York Marathon during the Museum of World Athletics (MOWA) Donation Ceremony. The careers of 15 running stars from the last five decades were also honoured, including female distance running pioneers Rosa Mota, Kathrine Switzer, Joan Benoit and Jacqueline Hansen.

NEW YORK CITY (USA): Frenchman Dorian Louvet (36) set a special “world record” in New York: he ran all seven major marathons this year, averaging under 2:30. Tokyo (2:19:02), Boston (2:33:41), London (2:33:23), Sydney (2:28:08), Berlin (2:28:24), and Chicago (2:25:27). In New York finished  in 62nd place, but with a respectable time of 2:27:09.
