Cherotich 9:01.76 GR, Thorner 9:05.45 EL


GLASGOW (GBR, Jul 29): Day three of athletics at Commonwealth Games finished with the top women’s steeple race. Reigning World champion Faith Cherotich clocked a Games record 9:01.76 ahead of fast-finishing Elise Thorner 9:05.45 PB and European lead 2026 and Olympic winner Peruth Chemutai 9:09.96.

Former World champion Tajay Gayle won long jump for Jamaica 815 (+1.5) followed by Sreeshankar from India 809 (+0.3) and surprise bronze for Scotland by Stephen Mackenzie 808 (+0.9). Sarah Mitton fulfilled the favorite role and defended the title in shot put for Canada with 19.88. Silver for Nigerian Jessica Oji 17.87 (17.70) on countback over Lloydricia Cameron from Jamaica also 17.87 (17.40).

World medalist Kate O´Connor, competing for Northern Ireland, scored an excellent 6569 points to win the heptathlon. She got 13.54, 182, 12.85, 24.14 and on day two 637 outdoor PB, 52.85 and 2:10.45. Her 2nd best ever score. Jade O´Dowda silver for England 6278 and Australian bronze Tori West 6104.

World champion Lilian Odira led the 800 m women’s semifinalists with 1:59.39. Among the top names not qualified were Prudence Sekgodiso, Halimah Nakaayi and Jemma Reekie. Ezekiel Nathaniel from Nigeria clocked the fastest heat time in the 400 m hurdles with 48.69.
