Vinny Mauri has had a whirlwind year.

Last April, on April 26, 2026, in particular, Vinny Mauri won the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon in a spectacular 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 54 seconds! Vinny broke the course record by fourteen minutes and won the race by sixteen minutes!

Vinny Mauri put himself on the global marathoning map with the fastest debut ever by an American!

“I feel like I’ve unintentionally been training for the marathon my whole life.” Vinny Mauri, Bank of America Chicago Marathon athlete event

Social media went crazy, and our dear friends at LetsRun.com really provided insight into this young, exciting runner. We learned that Vinny was self-coached. We learned that Mr. Mauri had run at Arizona State as an undergrad and at the University of Notre Dame for graduate school.

Vinny Mauri’s personal bests are modest. A 3:59.05 mile run in 2024, a 3,000-meter indoor run of 7:54.65 (2024), and a 13:34.03 for the 5,000 meters at Notre Dame. Remember, Vinny ran 13:39.13 at Arizona State.

Mauri has good leg speed, as shown by a 1:49.40 outdoors for 800 meters (2022) and a 3:41.65 1,500m (2022).

Vinny Mauri was haunted by stress reactions and soft-tissue injuries. The changing coaching dynamics at Arizona State frustrated him, and his move to Notre Dame brought PBs in the mile, 3,000 meters, and 5,000 meters.

The injuries were tough.

In my interview pre-Chicago Marathon, Vinny told me that his best trait is the “Ability to Pivot,”

He exemplified that by moving to self-coaching, training on treadmills at Planet Fitness, and focusing on training volume, rest and recovery, and nutrition.

Have you ever trained on a treadmill? Let me tell you, it is boring as hell. I spent two years on a small treadmill, watching movies as I got my miles in, and it got the job done, but it was not ideal.

“The treadmill only goes down to a 4:50 pace, so, at times, it felt pretty pedestrian in a plated shoe.” Vinny Mauri, on his treadmill training.

Most distance runners would shudder at the thought of grinding away on a machine so boring it has earned the nickname “dreadmill.”

But for Vinny Mauri, the treadmill turned out to be far more than the workout machine of last resort.

Vinny Mauri told me in Chicago that he ran on treadmills because of Ohio’s poor weather. It also takes stress off his body, given the demands of being an elite marathon athlete. To paraphrase writer Kenny Moore, who wrote about Olympian Ron Hill, Vinny Mauri is definitely possessed by the scientific method!

Vinny Mauri was worth the wait! The young man who ran 2:05:54 solo in his first marathon, and trains on treadmills for much of his training block is amazingly mellow and realistic about racing in the big times! If weather is good, I believe Vinny can break the AR and perhaps, even more!

Vinny Mauri is represented by Hawi Management, one of the most highly regarded athlete management groups, with huge success placing athletes with several top brands. After much interest, Vinny Mauri signed with ASICS, which seems to be on an athlete-signing spree as they build toward LA28.

There are a hundred stories on the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Here’s what matters to me: Vinny Mauri went out hard, but not crazy. He set a pending AR at 30k on the course, leading Clayton Young and Charles Hicks, until he cramped up. In those cramping issues, Vinny used his pivoting style, stretched, and got back up each time. I recall some media noting that, after cramping stop 2, Vinny was done. Au contraire, mes amis!

Clayton Young, dealing with a 12 cm hamstring tear, battled to the first American in 2:05.23; Charles Hicks ran 2:05.35; and Vinny Mauri was the third American in 2:06:45

Here’s what I see about Vinny Mauri: he has completed the US Olympic Trials marathon. This guy is quite capable of breaking the American record of 2:04:43. There are at least five men in the US marathon food chain: Connor Mantz, Clayton Young, Charles Hicks, and Vinny Mauri! Watch for others, as I believe Galen Rupp, who ran a fine 2:06.55, broke the AR for the 40-44 record.

The 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon will be held in St. Louis, Missouri, on March 25, 2028. Who will make the team?

One thing is certain: Vinny Mauri is shaking up the food chain in the global marathon world, and brands that overlooked him will kick themselves.

Vinny Mauri is for real!
