2017 Vilnius Diaries: News from European Athletics

Here is the news from the recent meetings from European Athletics Association, with special thanks from EME News.

VILNIUS (LTU): In the vote for the host city of next EA Congress in April 2019 (elections) Prague won with 29 ahead of Tbilisi 20 and Funchal 1.
VILNIUS (LTU): More than 90,000 tickets have already been sold for next year’s European Athletics Championships in Berlin, organisers announced during the EA Convention. The target for ticket sales is 275,000. Organisers say the biggest demand so far is for the evening sessions of August 10, 11 and 12.
VILNIUS (LTU): All eight proposed amendments to European Athletics constitution were unanimously approved at the EA congress, reports insidethegames. General alignment on topics such as gender equality, eligibility criteria, athletes’ voice and vote at the Council were among the proposals. Athletes will now have representation on the EA Council. The others related to roles, duties and power and European Athletics Association (EAA) Court, EAA Code of Ethics and Ethics Board.
VILNIUS (LTU): Valentin Balakhnichev, the former head of the Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) has had his European Athletics honorary council membership revoked after a unanimous vote in Vilnius during the EA Congress.
VILNIUS (LTU): Italy’s Roberto Luigi Quercetani, an renowned sports journalist and mainly athletics historian and statistician was named as a plaque of merit awardee. It was recieved by FIDAL head Alfio Giomi. Another statistician Sweden´s Lennart Julin got the EA Golden Pin. Golden pins were also awarded to Hungary’s Imre Matrahazi, Israel’s Jack Cohen, Montenegro’s Milorad Vuletić, Serbia’s Snežana Pajkić-Jolović and the late Ukrainian journalist and TV commentator Olexander Mashchenko.
VILNIUS (LTU): To clarify the number of countries in the new DNA concept, there will be 6 countries in a match, but in total there will be 5 matches in first round what means in summary 30 countries competing in athletics at European Games in Minsk in June 2019.
