Kirt, Dacres, Rodgers beat Gatlin

TURKU (FIN, Jun 11): At the 57th Paavo Nurmi Games (IAAF World Challenge), Estonia’s Magnus Kirt extended his win streak with victory in the javelin with 88.32m in the fourth round to beat the last two Olympic champions Thomas Rohler from Germany (86.33m) and Trinidad & Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott (86.09m) with Oliver Helander the best of the Finns in fourth with a season’s best of 84.84m. The top eight throwers all surpassed the 81m line. However, Daniel Stahl suffered his first defeat of the season after fouling out in the men’s discus which was won by Jamaica’s Fedrick Dacres with 66.74m (also throws of 66.63m, 66.18m) with Olympic champion Christoph Harting improving to his season’s best to 66.01m to finish second ahead of Poland’s Piotr Malachowski (65.99m) and Norway’s Ola Stunes Isene (65.75m). China’s Zhu Yaming recorded a wind-aided 17.36m to win the triple jump along with a wind legal 17.21m – just two centimetres off his lifetime best – while Bulgaria’s Gabriela Petrova was the only jumper to surpass 14 metres in the women’s triple jump, her best effort of 14.29 (+2.6, legal 14.22) coming in the third round. Chase Ealey from the United States won the shot put with 19.38m from Jamaica’s Danniel Thomas-Dodd (19.03m) and Canada’s Alysha Newman cleared 4.62m to win the pole vault with Jenn Suhr a non-starter with reported injury. On the track, Mike Rodgers defeated Justin Gatlin in the 100m – 10.00 to 10.01 – and Christina Clemons won the 100m hurdles in 12.85 after a season’s best of 12.58 in the heats. Brazil’s Eduardo De Deus edged out Italy’s Hassane Fofana in the 110m hurdles – 13.42 to 13.44 – and Canada’s Crystal Emmanuel won the women’s 100m in 11.19. Andy Bayer took a rare US win in the 3000m steeplechase in 8:18.29 from Kenya’s Nicholas Bett (8:21.20) with Finn Topi Raitanen third in a 8:21.47 PB and Kenya’s Cornelius Tuwei won the men’s 800m in 1:46.37. There was also a notable result in the women’s 1500m as Uganda’s Winnie Nanyondo won in 4:06.21 ahead of Ethiopia’s Fantu Taye (4:06.27) and Belarus’ Darya Baryasevich (4:06.50) to break Francie Larrieu’s track record which dates back to 1976. Anita Wlodarczyk ruled in women hammer with Finnish All-comers record 75.61. Ella Junilla jumped national record 194 in the pre-programme.
