Malaika Mihambo soars to Lifetime best roof 7.16m at German Champs, Day 2! Mein Gott!

Malaika Mihambo has had four performances over 7 meters in 2019. On 6 June 2019, at the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala, Malaika leaped 7.07m, a new PB! On 14 June 2019, at the Anhalt 2019 meeting, in Dassau, Germany, the European champion jumped 7.05m, her second best ever! At the London Diamond League, on 21 July 2019, Malaika flew 7.02m, to take the win. In the German Championships today, Malaika Mihambo put herself in World Contention with a flying, soaring, amazing 7.16m! On to Doha!

BERLIN (GER, Aug 4): European champion Malaika Mihambo produced a lifetime best of 7.16 (+0.4) in the sixth round of the long jump on the second day of the German Championships to improve her world lead. Fellow European champions Gesa Felicitas Krause won the 3000m steeplechase in 9:28.45 and Mateusz Przybylko won the high jump with 2.22m but reigning European and Olympic champion Thomas Rohler had to settle for third in the javelin with 82.70m behind Andreas Hofmann who won it in the sixth round with 87.07m from Julian Weber’s 86.60m. Reigning world champion Johannes Vetter was a DNS. After winning the 100m on Saturday, Tatjana Pinto completed the sprint double with victory in the 200m in a 22.65 (+0.9) PB ahead of Lisa Marie Kwayie in 22.88 also PB with Steven Muller winning the men’s 200m in 20.63 (+0.1). Elsewhere, Luna Bulmahn and Manuel Sanders won the 400m titles in PBs of 52.37 and 45.86 respectively and Carolina Krafzik took more than two seconds off her PB to win the 400m hurdles title in 55.64 from Jackie Baumann in 56.26. Other track highlights included Constantin Preis winning the men’s 400m hurdles title in 49.32 ahead of Luke Campbell (49.56), Caterina Granz winning the 1500m in 4:08.91 and Richard Ringer winning the 5000m in a sprint finish in 14:01.69 from Sam Parsons in 14:02.38. Former European champions Christina Schwanitz (18.84m in the shot put) and Max Hess (16.50m in the triple jump) were also in winning form, Kristin Pudenz won a competitive discus with 64.37m ahead of Nadine Muller (63.99m) and Shanice Craft (63.22m) and Raphael Holzdeppe cleared 5.76m to win the pole vault title from European U23 champion Bo Kanda Lita Baehre with 5.71m. During second day 34 350 spectators watched at the Olympic Stadium.
