DOHA NEWS

DOHA (QAT): On a Scandinavian night Norway and Sweden won gold medals on Monday also with the best and enthusiastic crowd so far. Karsten Warholm fought back this year to re-establish his supremacy, leading throughout tonight’s final to cross the finish line in 47.42, ahead of Rai Benjamin (47.66). Abderrahmane Samba, whose momentum was stalled by injury earlier this year, surged home to take the bronze (48.03) and earn host nation Qatar’s first medal of the championships. But the World record was on that night far away. Daniel Stahl got third Worlds gold for a male athlete for Sweden (after Patrick Sjoberg 1987 and Christian Olsson 2003).

DOHA (QAT): Earlier in a giddy evening of outstanding distance races there were rapturous scenes by the the back straight as a mass of flag-waving Ethiopians who had roared their way through the men’s 5000m final acclaimed a gold and silver medallist after Muktar Edris had successfully defended his title by outsprinting his young rival Selemon Barega. The future is coming in the shape of 19-year-old Barega and fellow teenager Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway, who made a bold bid for victory with 300 metres to go, but was over-run in the last 100 metres and finished an exhausted fifth. But Edris (12:58.85) has held it back for now.

DOHA (QAT): For unbridled joy on the track, there was no rival for Ugandan runner Halima Nakaayi, after she upset the favourite, USA’s Ajee Wilson, to win the 800m title in a national record of 1:58.04, and second female gold for her country after Dorcas Inzikuru won the first steeple in 2005.

DOHA (QAT): World record-holder Beatrice Chepkoech of Kenya produced a remorseless solo effort to win the women’s 3000m steeplechase, banishing her disappointment from the last World Championships in London, where she mistakenly ran off the course and missed the water jump while leading on the first lap and had to double back, and then fell on the second lap, before eventually finishing fourth. There were no hitches this time as she won in a championship record of 8:57.84, having led by 50 metres at the bell.

DOHA (QAT): Mariya Lasitskene successfully defended her women’s hig jump title with a first-time clearance of 2.04m. What was unexpected, however, was the prodigious challenge she had to withstand from Ukrainian teenager Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who also cleared 2.04m on her third attempt to secure silver with a world U20 record. And had already got the U20 global mark with 202 clearance.

DOHA (QAT): Karsten Warholm looks set to contest the 400m heats today. After winning the 400m hurdles title, he said: “This is only the beginning for all of us. Tomorrow I’ve got to get up and work again.

DOHA (QAT): Dafne Schippers, Marie-Josee Ta Lou and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce did not run the heats of 200 m from different reasons. Schippers due to an injury, Shelly-Ann was replaced by Schillonie Calvert.

DOHA (QAT): Filip Ingebrigtsen dropped out of the 5000m final in Doha due to breathing difficulties.

DOHA (QAT): Officials in Qatar today blamed the television schedule and the Saudi Arabia-led blockade for the poor attendances at the championships. It is claimed that 11,800 turned up for the opening session on Friday (September 27) and 11,300 for the following day which featured the men’s 100 metres final. But for Sunday evening it is reported at 8000 level. Writes insidethegames.

DOHA (QAT): IAAF confirmed that on the request of USATF, the IAAF can confirm that Mr Alberto Salazar’s IAAF World Championships accreditation has been deactivated. Salazar is coaching for example Sifan Hassan who won the 10 000 m and announced she will go for 1500 m and not for 5000 m. German federation issued a statement which said that distance runner Konstanze Klosterhalfen is coached by Pete Julien in Portland and is supporting the anti-doping fight and is against any violations of the rules.

COLORADO SPRINGS (USA): The long-running situation between coach Alberto Salazar – one of the most successful in the sport – and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency turned into a four-year suspension on Monday as a three-member arbitration panel handed down a 140-page decision on the case. Salazar was charged back in June 2017 with doping violations by the USADA and this began a lengthy proceeding which included two in-person hearings in 2018 and a literal ton of evidence. ň

DOHA (QAT): Athletics has been slow to evolve in comparison to other sports, commented nine-time Olympic champion Carl Lewis. Speaking at an International Sports Press Association event in Doha.
