EUROPEAN ATHLETICS NEWS

LAUSANNE (SUI): Dublin and Turin will host the 2021 and 2022 editions of the European Athletics Cross Country Championships after cooperation led to a one-year postponement of both events. Dublin had been awarded the 2020 championships but pulled out of staging it due to the pandemic. European Athletics announced today that Turin, which had been due to organise the event in 2021, had agreed to do so the following year instead. European Athletics Interim President Dobromir Karamarinov said: “We would like to thank Torino-La Mandria for their cooperation to allow Dublin to stage next year’s event. Ireland and Italy both have a rich tradition in staging not only continental but also global cross country events so we are naturally delighted to reallocate the next two editions of the championships to two proud and passionate cross country running nations.” When the event is held in La Mandria Park in 2022, Italy will become the first country to stage it four times.

LAUSANNE (SUI): European Athletics Interim President Dobromir Karamarinov confirmed that he plans to stand for the position on a permanent basis following the death in June of Svein Arne Hansen. Informs insidethegames. There is now due to be an election in October 2021 at congress in Lausanne where the winner will complete the rest of Hansen’s term, due to conclude in April 2023. “It’s my obligation to fulfil the full mandate of Svein,” the 62-year-old Bulgarian told insidethegames at the conclusion today of the 160th European Athletics Council meeting, which was held online.

LAUSANNE (SUI): European Athletics has not been as badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic as many other federations. That is mainly because of an insurance pay out following the cancellation of the European Championships, which had been due to take place in Paris between August 25 and 30. The Local Organising Committee had reported last year that their budget for the event was €17 million, although interim President Dobromir Karamarinov claimed a confidentially clause meant he could not disclose the exact amount that European Athletics had received. “Our financial situation is very stable,” Karamarinov said. It has meant that European Athletics has been able to continue to fund national governing bodies, and there are even plans to increase how much they distribute. From insidethegames.
